State Meet moves from UK to Paul Dunbar
The State High School Track and Field Meet will move from the University of Kentucky next month to Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.

That word came yesterday from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Julian Tackett, assistant commissioner of the KHSAA, said at last night's city meet that the change came because UK's nationally ranked baseball team could be in line to host an NCAA regional tournament the same weekend as the State Meet, June 2-3. UK's baseball stadium is adjacent to the track.

By moving to Dunbar, the State Meet will have only one pole-vault pit rather than two, and high-jumpers will be taking off from the artificial-turf football field rather than UK's track apron. Otherwise, athletes shouldn't notice many other changes.

"We had to go ahead and make a decision," Tackett said, adding that the KHSAA couldn't wait to learn if UK will land the baseball event. "We had to go ahead and make a decision. ... We've looked at (Dunbar) as a backup site for a couple years."
