Chris Martens, who also won the title during the indoor season, claimed the state championship in the pole vault and in the process qualified for the New England championship as the top seed.
"For Chris, the pole vault is really a family affair. His father and mother were here early making sure they had the poles and everything set for the event. It's a nice way for him to cap his career repeating the pole vault title in the state from indoor to outdoor," said Connell.
"We're very proud of Chris," Branford coach Rich Biondi said. "He won in every meet this year. It's unique to have someone who's able to say he's the best in the state in his event."
A competitive field with four vaulters over 13 feet, Martens had little problem at the 13-6 mark, the top height cleared by Nate Barlow of Woodstock and Jonathan Wenderoth of Fitch who tied for second place.
Martens went for 14-0 and cleared easily in his second attempt.
"At times, he hasn't had his best vaults this year, but he's always found a way to win at the big meets. I think it's been frustrating for him at times, but today was one of those days where he was just on his game," commented Connell.
