VAULTING TO THE TOP: Good advice for a sophomore who can pole vault 10 feet is to continue practicing.

Douglas Freeman's Kevin Brinkley went the other direction. He took the next year off.

Now a senior, Brinkley has elevated from 10-0 to 14-0, establishing himself as one to watch. He is ranked first in the area in the latest outdoor rankings by 1½ feet.

"This was real nice for such a hard worker like Kevin," pole vault coach Jeff Butler said about Brinkley's school-record tying 14-0 jump that earned second place at the Dogwood Track Classic in Charlottesville last weekend. "With about a month left, I expect him to go a little higher."

To do so, Brinkley will have to ditch his 14-foot pole for a 15-foot pole, the next level up that Freeman has.

At Dogwood, Brinkley used a 14-6 pole courtesy of a Deep Run vaulter.
