Jamestown’s Durante sets new pole vault record

NORFOLK - Nick Durante is determined to win a state championship in the pole vault.

The Jamestown High senior travels to Richmond twice a week to work with a coach who teaches highly, specific vaulting techniques to high school athletes across the state.

Durante’s extra work has paid off so far, as he continues to rewrite the school’s pole vaulting record book with another standout performance Saturday at the Norfolk State University Invitational.

The senior established a new school record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 14-0. Durante’s leap on Saturday marked the seventh time he has set a new standard in the school event, including the previous mark of 13-6 accomplished earlier this spring.
