Greater Latrobe's Caitlin Hewitt and Mount Pleasant's Donnie Ament were named Westmoreland County's top scholar-athletes of the year during the 50th annual awards banquet at Ferrante's Lakeview restaurant Tuesday night. The dinner, which honored 38 scholar-athletes from the county's 19 high schools, was presented by Westmoreland County Family Court Presiding Judge John J. Driscoll.

Ms. Hewitt, the reigning WPIAL and PIAA girls pole vault champion, and Mr. Ament, who logged a state-record 179 wins during his wrestling career in addition to winning a state title, were selected by the Driscoll committee from among 12 finalists.

"I'm very surprised," said Ms. Hewitt. "This award is special because all the finalists are talented athletes who excelled in the classroom." Ms. Hewitt will attend Stanford University on a track and field scholarship. Her 4.05 GPA ranks ninth among a class of 392.

"It's just an incredible feeling. It just shows that you don't have to sacrifice academics to become an outstanding athlete," Mr. Ament said.
