Pine Plains took second at qualifer

Neil Murray knew it all along.

Since the sport runs deep into his bloodlines, the Pine Plains High School track coach figured he'd be involved in the sport somehow, some way. His grandmother's uncle was Ireland native Jack Cosgrave, who migrated to the United States and held the triple jump world record in the late 1800s.

Murray's father, Neil Sr., was a pole vaulter and was a member of the Manhattan College track team from 1963-68.

The younger Murray's siblings also are members of the track community.

His brother, Tim Murray, currently competes at Southern Connecticut State and his sister, Maureen Blackburn, was a part of the East Stroudsburg University squad.

Before coming to Pine Plains six years ago, Neil Murray honed his skills at the University at Buffalo from 1993-98.

He was a pole vaulter and ran sprints, something he still wishes he was capable of doing today. And that's exactly what he told someone in a recent conversation.

"The kid asked me if I miss track," Murray said. "And I can't compete anymore. That's one of the reasons I coach track â€â€
