Saxer sets girl's prep pole vault record

After raising the National High School Indoor girl's indoor pole vault record three times already this year, Mary Saxer of Lancaster, N.Y., did it twice at Dartmouth College Saturday, and became the first U.S. high school girl ever to clear 14 feet either indoors or outdoors.

Having set national records earlier this season of 4.10m/13-5.25, 4.11m/13-5.50 and 4.14m/13-7, Saxer raised the record Saturday to 4.15m/13-7.25, before her barrier-breaking clearance on her second attempt at 4.27m/14-0. She later missed three attempts at 4.36m/14-3.50.

During her record-setting performance in the pole vault, Saxer also competed simultaneously in the long jump, where she was the runner-up with a best of 5.62m/18-5.25.

Seriously though, they did have a guy jump 17' on 17' poles back around '98. He used to post on the vaultworld board back in the day and he couldn't figure out why he couldn't jump more than a foot over his grip.

yeah, he was like 6' 4", weighed 205 or something, and looked like he was 40.

They had another guy, Mike Brown, who jumped 17' 10" or something. He wasn't big and was on tiny poles, but he was fast and could get back like a mother.

I talked to one of the girl vaulters from Notre Dame a couple weeks ago and most of their vaulters are already out (or just weren't jumping that weekend) because of injuries. She has been hurt for the past two years. She said they run them to death in their spikes on the track and they all have really bad shin problems. I know one of their guys is out with lots of stress fractures in his shins right now.

what size of pole was she on and weight does anyone know

There are some coaches out there with whom I disagree strongly when it comes to training and conditioning pole vaulters.

Scott Winsor (Notre Dame jumps coach) isn't one of them.

And I'm not going to list who I think the culprits are on a public message board like this one.

i went to a notre dame track and field camp this past summer and from my experience, they have a good overall program, bu they are deffinetly not a school that i would choose to go for pole vault, my high school has a far larger pole selection, and we are lucky enough to have two coaches to ourselves. i agree, scott winsor is a great guy and he knows what he is doing, and the pole vault coach is also a great buy, but may know a little less.

That's one thing that won't really be a problem for Mary. Her school will get all the free poles she needs.

those are words that every vaulter loves to hear after being stuck with a very limited selection for so long
