USA Outdoor Predictions: ??

What do you ladies predict will happen at the USA's. Will the old guys rule or will some young pups get into the action. Seems like we always talk about how great the young ones are but then something "strange" or unexpected happens.

Here are my picks and some general reasons:

1. Brad Walker: obvious pick here, jumping great and recently hit 5.85 in euro. Probably on top in USA right now considering everything.

2. Tim Mack: seems to be getting into good shape. Jumped 5.75 in euro last week or so. Has always jumped REALLY well at that track, all the way back to pre-tennessee days. Usually well-prepared for US champs if healthy.

3. Tommy Skipper: Looked unbelievable at NCAA's, just made poor pole selection. Made like a .4 jump in poles, probably needed more like a .2 jump to an 11.8. If so he would have the NCAA meet record. Looks consistent. That downhill runway might give him the x-tra boost for the 11.6 and a good 5.80 to 5.90 jump.

4. Buller: Looks good again. Has apparently re-committed to jump high. Good competitor at big meets at times. Probably needs to make it happen soon and have a big breakthrough.

5. Hartwig: He ain't done yet folks. Don't know if he's healthy. Watch for some small meets in Ark. to get him tuned up. Always a threat. Deserves redemtion from getting screwed here in 1997 USA's and getting fourth.

I can't imagine IUPUI's runway is any more downhill than Sac State's. I think they are both set on the crown of the field.

Downhill: big time. Probably as much as anywhere. Have to push hard in the back if you have a long run cause its uphill. Have to be tall and quick and trust the out step on the downhill.

IUPUI is not that much downhill. I compete there twice a year at Bethel College, and it doesn't seem any different to me than any other runway, other than it is very fast and very hard. I don't have any difference in runway marks both at my end mark and my mid-mark, so I don't know how it could be a downhill runway. Looks to me like they leveled it out pretty good, since its not a football stadium but a track stadium. Just my two cents, but I guess I don't really know for sure...

Maybe you're right. Fast track and downhill seems to even out the not so perfect winds. Marks could still be the same, that wouldn't matter so I don't think that guarantees a level runway. Last USA champs there was pretty studly with lots of guys jumping 5.70 plus and several guys over 5.80.

heres my picks...

1. Brad Walker (could boom a big one)
2. Toby (6m and more)
3. Tommy Skipper (never been at this level but could just BLAST one)
4. Buller (he might just win it)

these are my picks if wind is okay and noone goes crazy with some 19'10" jump.

6m = 2nd.....come on. I foresee no more than 2 guys over 5.80 (MAX). 6m has never lost a competition in the history of the world to my knowledge.

perhaps he meant that toby has the potential to vault 6m and more...not that that would be his second-place height?

btw, does anyone know the highest losing height ever?
