I was just wondering if anyone around this forum has ever heard of Dave Volz. He was an Indiana University Vaulter and later went to the Olympics in 1992 and cleared 19'

I am all for holding the bar, I don't do it very well, but I am still all for it.
I say, if you can leave the bar up, then congratulations on a make. If it falls, then it falls, and there are no judgement calls. I am a lyrical master!
Sure, I've seen guys make bars that they would not have without a holder, but it makes the sport more exciting for the fans. A little like the "buzzer beater", no chance, but it works sometimes.
First there were no holders, now 55cm pegs and a round top on the bar. Do those higher up want us to miss?

Do those round tops make it any harder? My coach thinks they make the bottom side weighted more so that it is actually a little easier to stay up. I think they are just a pain in the butt for the people putting up the bar.
And how many schools are actually using them? Of the 7 meets I have been to this year, the only one I recall using both the new pegs AND the new crossbar ends was Reno!

About the pegs and the round cross bars, I have herd and my sources are pretty reliable, that those rules came down in some way of form from Bubka. I love the guy and I might be wrong but the higher ups don’t like their records to be broken, and what is the only way to ensure that your record will stand for a while? Make it harder, as if jumping 20+ wasn't exorbitantly hard enough. Now you have to do that on top of short pegs, an official watching hard for "volzing", and a cross bar rounded with only one flat side.

Hell yeah it does....If you brush the bar on the backside I would bet that more often that not, the peg will flip on the round side and roll right off the now 55mm pegs. Its horseshit folks. As far as holding is concerned, go nuts. Hold all you want. The number one thing that pisses me off is people that can routinely rape the hell out of bars, and leave them up without holding. NEVER works like that for me. If i touch it, its gone! Maybe if I had a better jump I would be in a position to hold--I always try, but I never have enough chest rotation to really get it to work.

Not if you are good - watched someone yesterday - short pins - round end - volz the heck out of it - I am not talented enough to worry about volzing - got to many other things to work on

Thanks Jeff. Dave invented it, Danny Burton perfected it, I took it to the next level!! The only people who dont like "holders" are the people who cant do it. In reality it causes more misses than not doing it at the lower hts.
