Stacy Dragila to surprise entrants in Reebok Grand Prix

Stacy Dragila, who at the 2000 Olympics won the first gold medal awarded in the women's pole vault, said she is planning to compete in the Reebok Grand Prixe on Saturday.

The race will be the first international competition ever held in the new Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island, and marks the return of world-class outdoor track and field to the East Coast.

The 34-year-old two-time world champion and 16-time US champion (eight outdoor titles and eight indoor), sustained an Achilles injury in early spring, and has missed most of the outdoor season while recovering.

The Reebok Grand Prix is one of the last chances to tune up for the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this month, where the pole-vault pioneer would have to compete to earn a spot on the US team for the World Championships later this summer.

DRAGILA OPENS CAMPAIGN IN NEW YORK
Former Olympic pole vault champion Stacy Dragila is a surprise entry and will be competing for the first time outdoors this year in Saturday's Reebok Grand Prix in New York.
Dragila still adamant she is a candidate to become one of the first woman to vault five metres, is using the meeting in her build-up to the US Championships beginning in Carson, California on June 23, where she will be bidding for a ninth national outdoor crown.

The 34-year-old pioneer of women's pole vaulting, last competed at the All-Stars indoor meeting in Donetsk in February.

There she insisted her main aim this summer would be qualifying for and attempting to regain her World Championships title.

Dragila deliberately had a low-key indoor season preferring to concentrate on training. But this was interrupted when she suffered an achilles injury in the spring, although now fully fit.
