(x) = broke a pole - not an attempt
What a competition! I though the previous trials all had their own
drama - '88 had Tim Bright almost stealing a place on the team after
coming to his first attempt after finishing the decathlon. '92 we saw
the heartbreak of Dean Starkey as he went from 2nd to 4th due to third
attempt makes at 19' by Dave Volz and Kory Tarpenning. I witnessed the
'96 trials where we saw the emergence of Jeff Hartwig and Lawrence
Johnson and saw a huge battle contested for the third spot between
Scott Huffman, Dean Starkey (again), Kory Tarpenning, Greg Duplantis
and Pat Manson. In 2000 while the marks weren't superb it came down
to a three way jumpoff for the final slot.
However I think we can say that in terms of marks and drama 2004 may
have been the best. Tons of strategic passes, tons of clutch third
attempt makes , 4 19-footers and a shot at the American record...
At 5.70 18'08.25 there were still 8 competitors in the hunt with only
Bubba McLean, Justin Norberg, Daniel Ryland and Jacob Pauli out. First
attempt misses were racked up by Davis, Harvey, Hysong, Walker, Buller
& Stevenson, while Mack and Miles took a share of the lead with first
attempt makes. Hysong, Walker, Buller (on actually his last shot
after one miss at 5.60 18'04.50) and Stevenson all made their second
leaving Davis the only one left at the height. He passed his third
attempt saving one last shot for 5.75 18'10.25 which he incredibly
made to take the lead for a brief moment.
Hysong made on his first as did Miles and Walker. Mack, Buller and
Stevenson passed. Harvey missed twice and passed to the next height.
At 5.80 19'00.25, Davis missed his first. Tye Harvey came up for his
last ditch attempt at 19' and made it to take the lead! They showed
this one on the telecast and it looked purty...
Miles cleared yet again on his first with plenty of room to spare to
stay clean. Only Toby Stevenson was also able to clear on the first
try. With no reason to jump at this height everyone else passed their
remaining attempts
At this point we had :
1 Miles
2 Stevenson
3 Harvey
4 Hysong
5 Walker
6 Davis
7 Mack
8 Buller
----- out -----
9 Jacob Pauli
10 Keenan King
10 Justin Norberg
12 Daniel Ryland
-- Robert McLean
The bar was raised to 5.85 19'02.25. Toby Stevenson took over the
lead with a huge 1st attempt clearance - on the telecast it looked
like he had at least 4" of height on it. Then came probably the
clutchest jump of the day. Tim Mack - mired in seventh place and with
one attempt left after one miss at 5.80 and one miss at this height
CLEARED. This knocked Miles down to third and Harvey off the Olympic
squad.
No one else was able to clear the height and then Tim and Toby had
the show to themselves...
At 5.90 19'04.25 Tim tied his all-time PR set just recently with a
monster clearance. Toby missed his initial try and in the true form
of gamesmanship passed to the next height. While he was close on his
third he couldn't navigate 5.95 19'06.25 and Tim Mack was crowned the
2004 US Champion. He then had the bar raised to a new American Record
of 6.04 19'09.75 but was not close.
Congrats to the US Olympic team of Tim Mack, Toby Stevenson and Derek
Miles. Good luck in Athens fellas!

This was a great blog - here we find out Buller broke a pole at his
first attempt at 5.65. According to the rules that's not an attempt
but in order to regroup he passed to 5.70.
