Jack Whitt and Mary Saxer both have the opportunity to do something extremely rare in US pole vaulting...be a former HS #1 ranked vaulter and make the Olympic team.
I can think of 3 off the top of my head...
Lawrence Johnson (HS #1 '94, OT '96, '00)
Nick Hysong (HS #1 '90, OT '00)
Casey Carrington (HS #1 '68/'69, OT '68)
Are there any others?

I think your recently forgetting Andrew Irwin. He was HS #1 last year and currently holds an A Standard. 2005 US #1 Jordan Scott also has a shot to make the team.

No. He only jumped 17' that year and there were 4 or 5 from Texas (including him) over that. In TX, Jacob Davis (17'3) and Jim Davis (17'1) both jumped higher that year. I can't remember the other(s). Other than Russ Buller, I can't remember if there were any others over 17' that year.

Was this the national leader at the time? Texas was far behind other states in the PV in the 60s and I assume earlier also. The HS national record was near or over 16' before TX got it's first 14-footer in high school.

I don't know. My record books don't cover that year and I don't remember.
Except for Bill Miller, what university did the rest of the vaulters I mentioned go to?
In the 1936 games, that same university put all three of the USA olympic team vaulters on the team to Berlin.
