Derek just cleared 18'8" from 10 steps (5 lefts) in practice at the building. That beat his previous best from that run by 8" :star:

How does someone jump 18-8 from 5 lefts, yet can only jump 19 from 9 or 10 lefts?

Well it was a PR from that run by 8"... I'd say he's ready to jump higher from longer.

usually a short run pr can be an indicator of this.
plus, you have to remember that this was probably a perfect vault considering that in practice you are not limited to the usual 3 attempts as in a meet. i dont usually put too much stock in practice pr's, but still,18-8 from only ten strides is unreal.

I wasn't keeping track of his total makes and misses... but I am pretty sure he cleared 18-8 on his 3rd try at the height. He cleared a lot of bars, I don't know that it took more than 3 at any one height, but I cannot say for sure.

Anyone who can clear 18'8 from any amount of lefts is incredible, let alone 5 lefts, so I don't think the amount of attempts really matters. If anyone else on this message board can clear 18'8 from 5 lefts they can talk, the rest of us should just sit at our computers with our tongues hanging out of our mouths.

That's not unusual for Big Rig. He has a PR from one left of over 13'. It's either 13'3" or 13'4", something like that. That is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Go Derrick!

We WATCHED him do 13'6" from one left!!! :dazed: He's so close it looks like he is just standing there and then just jumps straight up over the bar!

Are there any videos of him doing that anywhere?

Earl has an instructional tape that was put out by USATF developemental that has Derek jumping from 1,2, and 3 lefts. He does jump high but I'm not sure what the actual bar was. Tape was cheap also.

it depends on what things he translates well into the longer run (obviously he does lots right on both, im just talking details in his case). But from my personal experience. This year ive jumped close to 5.0m from 5 lefts, but then my PR from 8 is only 5.15. When i go to longer runs, my plant and trail leg dont come with me :crying:

anyway, just my $.02
