Track Coach Danny Wilkerson Named Coach of the Year
Bethel College assistant track and field Coach Danny Wilkerson was honored this past weekend with the title of “USA Elite Pole Vault Coach of the Year for 2010.”
Wilkerson, who has worked with a wide variety of athletes on the Bethel College track team over the past six years, spends the majority of his off time working with some of America’s top elite pole vaulters. These athletes include Mark Hollis, who resides in Elkhart, Ind. Hollis was the 2010 US National Champion in the Pole Vault and had a season best of 5.75 or 18’10”. Wilkerson also works with Mary Saxer, a South Bend resident. Saxer was the third place finisher at the 2010 US National Championship and had a season best of 4.50 or 14’9”. Both of these athletes spend the majority of their time training at Bethel College and the University of Notre Dame under the guidance of Coach Wilkerson. Both Mark and Mary are considered two of the United States top hopes to make the London Olympic team in 2012.
The award was presented at the 2011 Reno Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada. Wilkerson is also a member of the US National Pole Vault Staff and is a USATF Level 2 certified coach in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events.
