Valley's Dream as grand as ever
MLK Day track meet merges history with future promise.
By Andy Boogaard / The Fresno Bee
(Updated Monday, January 16, 2006, 5:57 AM)
The history of track and field in the central San Joaquin Valley, rich as its fertile soil, writes a new chapter today in the Run for the Dream meet at the Save Mart Center.
Attempting to transfer the glitter and impact of the former West Coast Relays indoors, meet officials are linking the Valley's worldly past in the sport with a vision toward the future on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The meet has attracted 1,300 competitors, including more than 60 professionals, who will compete on and within a 160-yard, four-lane wood track once used for years in the now-defunct Sunkist Invitational at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Several Valley-reared Olympic gold medalists, including Tommie Smith of Lemoore, will attend the event that will be rivaled nationally in venue size this year only by New York's 99th Millrose Games.
"It's exhilarating to know what we're trying to reignite," says Smith, the Olympic 200-meter champion in 1968 in Mexico City.
The West Coast Relays was launched in 1927 and for 50 years often met or exceeded world standards at Ratcliffe Stadium.
Before losing its mortality in large part because of a relic dirt track and the riches of European meets pilfering American stars, the Relays spawned several Olympians from the Valley.
Saturday night, Smith contributed to a powerful presence in a pre-meet "Banquet of Champions" at the Convention Center.
It was a verbal relay of epic proportions as comments were passed from Smith to Lee Evans (Madera) to Rafer Johnson (Kingsburg) to Randy Williams (Fresno) to Bob Mathias (Tulare) â€â€
