HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Michael James Thurber lost his life November 21, 2004, following an automobile accident in Huntsville, Ala.

Mike was born November 23, 1962 in Kansas City, Kan. He is survived by his wife, Nia Thurber of Huntsville, Ala.; his parents, Robert Thurber and Barbara Arnett of New Bern; three brothers, Robert, of Montgomery Ala., Joseph, of Raleigh and Karl, of New Bern; and his grandmother, Lee Meyer of Fairfax, Va.

Mike graduated from Rose High School in 1981 where he was active in sports and theater. He set a state pole vault record in 1981. He was an avid scuba diver and caver and was a long time member of the National Speleological Society. He was employed as a programmer by Madison Research in Huntsville, Ala. Michael will be remembered by those who have been privileged to know him, as a compassionate and caring individual. He will be so missed.

A visitation and Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, November 24 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 9640 Meridian St., Huntsville, Ala.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 26 at 2:30 p.m. at Garber United Methodist Church, New Bern, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be at Greenleaf Memorial Park, New Bern.

In memory of Michael, donations may be made to SCCI-SE Cave Conservancy, Post Office Box 71857, Chattanooga, TN 37407.
