Mitch Greeley, SCHSL State record 16' 9", broke pole

Unread postby Carolina Extreme » Sun May 09, 2004 12:42 pm

We had our SC High School State Championships this weekend. Mitch broke Chase's state "meet" record by 1" at 16' 9". Mitch then took three good attempts at 17' 1". The link is below.

In warmups, Mitch moved up to the smaller of his two new poles, a CarbonFX 16' 1" 180 lbs 17.8 flex and broke it on his first ever jump on it. Then jumped up in the pit flexing his muscles for the crowd. The pole break was 100% pilot error. The CarbonFX poles are great poles, but if you overload them they will break just like any of the others. Mitch broke it the same way Tommy Skipper broke his at Nike Indoors last year... pulling on the top hand. It was the first pole Mitch has broken so hopefully he will not make that mistake again.

In the comp he went to the 185 lb 17.2 flex on his first attempt at 16'9". SWEEEET ride! You aint never been unless you been on a carbon. :D

16'9" That's a massive jump! Bet he gets a lot of money for college! I can't belive that you already had your state meet! I guess there you have bigger schools and can have indoor track too! Here in South Dakota State isn't until the 28th and 29th!
PM me if you know of any vaults around the Midwest!

Hey Mr. Shealy, is Greeley gonna be in the Adidas outdoor championships this year? I'm thinking about flying out there from California but I wanna make sure that I'll get to vault with some of the best in the nation before I decide for sure.

Does anyone else know whose gonna be there?

The Adidas meet is an awesome meet and one that you will not want to miss. There are always big names there from around the country. Chase was fortunate enough to set the meet record last year at 17' 0.25". We were hoping Mitch would be there again this year, but it's not going to happen. He has one heck of a senior trip planned. I hope to be there with a few of my other vaulters though.

Mitch and best friend Jeff Squibbs, 15ft same HS this year, are driving :dazed: from SC across country via Jonesboro, Arkansas through Texas then New Mexico for the Great Southwest meet, then driving to San Luis Obispo, CA to see Chase for a day or two (maybe learn to surf a little O:-) ), then off to Sacramento for Golden West meet. Afterwards they'll be headed back to Texas for the USA Juniors. Whoowee! I'm tired just typing it. LOL Should make for some incredible memories. I hope they remember the video camera. ;)

Hey Rusty! Great Job with Mitch! I just broke a 15'6" 175 this weekend in two pieces. How many pieces did your pole break and where? Mine was right on the label. I thought it was unusual considering I took 3 warm ups on it that day.

I do agree that they have a smooth ride and will never go back to UCS.

Mitch's pole broke into two pieces. I forgot to mention that he wacked himself in the head pretty good with the piece in his hand. :crying: Left a good sized knot. Looked sort of like a Unicorn for a while. LOL He played it up great though and jumped up flexing in strong man poses, roaring at the crowd. LOL They loved it.
