The Legislative Council also instructed the UIL staff to study requiring helmets in pole vault competitions and sanctioning wheelchair track.

I highly doubt that. It sounded like this was something that was going to be researched, I assumed that meant the results of the research would not be discussed until the next meeting, and usually action does not take place until a meeting after that, if any action is going to take place.
But I could be wrong. I will try calling the UIL offices tomorrow and seeing if I can find anything out.

I called the UIL office today and spoke with Mark Cousins, one of the people involved in this researching of helmets.
They are currently researching helmets. That's all.
NO decision has been made yet on mandatory helmets. The medical people will meet again in April, and they will make a recommendation for the bigger meeting in June.
No decisions can be made before then.
Where are these rumors coming from?? Are people just misinterpreting the press release that says they are going to be studied??

Helmets arent necessarily a bad thing... I wore one in high school... Toby Stevenson (6.00m, 19'8" PR) wore one in high school and college and STILL wears one... It's just a safety precaution... This is just a way for the UIL to protect athletes where bad coaching, or no coaching, exists...

Helmets, in and of themselves, are not a bad thing.
The purpose of the application here though is comparable to putting a band-aide on a cancer victim.
When the UIL and NFHS finally decide to approach this issue seriously and intelligently, and require mandatory certification of all high school and jr. high vault coaches, then some progress other than trying to make the pits as big as a football field will have been made.

But, but he's a FOOTBALL COACH. That knowledge applies to ALL other sports.

Yeah... Didnt you know that a being Football coach in Texas also certifies you as a licensed Pole Vault coach as well as a doctor, chiropractor, therapist, land surveyor, CPA, dentist, and I think you can also qualify for God if your team has a good enough record...
