Local pole vaulters have lofty state goals

Pole vaulting isn't like baseball or basketball. An athlete can't just pick it up around the neighborhood, there's no little league pole vaulting at the local park.

A vaulter has to work to find places to practice and, in some cases, be willing to travel to find instruction. According to two vaulters from Hays County that are headed to the state meet, those few dedicated athletes will find a different world within a sport perfect for diehards.

Jason Colwick, a senior at San Marcos High, and Jessica Doyle, a sophomore at Hays High, both qualified for the state track meet to be held in Austin's Mike A. Myers Stadium this weekend. Both found pole vaulting through similar paths, translating early gymnastics work into high school pole vaulting careers.
