Track and field: Fredericksburg's Weirich focused on vault

Though he's best known as the area's leading pole vaulter, Fredericksburg senior Victor Weirich usually includes the hurdles and 1,600-meter relay in his list of activities.

But with a chance to make a midseason statement leading to next month's Class 4A state meet, Weirich will concentrate on his specialty today at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

"He's only going to vault," Fredericksburg coach Michael Stevens said.

"We're approaching it as a fun opportunity. Not many athletes get a chance to perform on this stage."

One of the country's most prestigious track and field meets, the Texas Relays began Wednesday at UT's Meyers Stadium with collegiate competition.

The high school division opens today, including the pole vault at 1:30p.m.

Of the handful of San Antonio area athletes who will participate, Weirich could have the best shot at victory.

Weirich leads the area at 16 feet, 7 inches.

That would be a Greater San Antonio record by four inches, but Fredericksburg does not qualify (GSA is defined by the Express-News as Bexar County and its seven adjacent counties).

Leading the varsity was senior Victor Weirich, a gold medalist in three events and a qualifier in a relay.

Weirich won the pole vault on Tuesday with 16’ and came back on Wednesday to win both the 110 and 300 meter hurdle events and run the first leg on the 1600 meter relay.
