AUSTIN, TX— On the recommendation of Dr. David Lakey, Commissioner of the Texas
Department of State Health Services, and in consultation with Texas Education Agency
Commissioner Robert Scott, the University Interscholastic League is altering its schedule of
events due to the outbreak of the swine flu in Texas. Effective immediately, all UIL
interscholastic competition is suspended until May 11.

“The health and safety of our student activity participants is of the utmost importance,” said
UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Taking every possible precaution to
prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of
our great state, and altering the schedule of our events is a way to keep our participants
safe.”

As this is a fluid situation, the UIL tentatively releases the following schedule for UIL
regional and state events affected by this situation.

Regional Track Meets
All UIL regional track meets originally scheduled for this weekend, May 1-2, have been
cancelled. The state track and field meet will be extended to a three-day format to include
semifinal heats. The meet is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May
14-16.

Semifinal qualifiers will be based on the district track meet results. Each region will be
represented at the state meet by the top four performances in each event for all conferences.
Hand-held times will be converted to fully automatic times as defined by the National
Federation of State High School Association rules. A revised track and field state meet
schedule will be posted on the UIL web site no later than Friday, May 1. Qualifiers to the
UIL state track and field meet will be posted on the UIL web site on Wednesday, May 6.

According to Dallas Morning news they are considering changing their minds and postpone the regional meets. Please contact the uil and let them know how unfair it is to cancel regionals. They are pushing back baseball and softball, track should get the same. Imagine what would happen if they dropped the 3rd and 4th place teams from the BB playoffs and picked up at the area round. Track always gets the short stick. I have 3 senior vaulters who only vault and regionals would be the highlight of their season and they will be robbed of that opportunity.

Regional track meets
This weekend's regional track meets were originally going to be scrapped while the upcoming baseball and softball playoff schedules would only be tweaked.

But Breithaupt said his office has contacted all of its regional sites to see what dates would be available in mid-May. If that happens, the state track meet would be pushed back into possibly late May.

A new postseason track schedule could be announced later this week.

AUSTIN, TX— After collaborating with University of Texas officials and the twenty UIL
regional track meet hosts, the UIL has tentatively rescheduled the regional track meets to
take place after interscholastic competition resumes on May 11. Additionally, the state track
meet is scheduled to be held June 5-6 at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at
Austin.

“The decision to suspend competition was not a decision we took lightly,” said UIL
Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Much effort and consideration was given to
resurrect the regional track meets and change the dates for the state meet. With the
cooperation of our regional sites and the University of Texas, we are now able to hold the
regional and state track meets as we had originally intended.”

On April 29, 2009 the UIL announced that the state track meet would be held May 14-16
and that qualifiers would come from the top four participants in each event from each
region.

“At that time, we were simply trying to save the state track meet,” said Breithaupt. “When
our staff had the time, opportunity and information they were able to make this happen. We
had numerous calls in support of the original decision as well as calls to return to the
regional format. We also know that additional conflicts may occur because of these
changes. However, we believe this schedule represents the best opportunity for the most
students.”
