Mansfield sophomore Shade Weygandt has had the help of the son of a pole vaulting legend. Weygandt, who won the 5A state title as a freshman last year by clearing 12-9, competes for Club Altius. The pole vaulting club team is coached by Paul Richards, the son of Bob Richards, an Olympic gold medalist in the pole vault in 1952 and 1956.
In January, Weygandt set a national record for sophomores by clearing 13-6 at an indoor meet. Weygandt, who is so serious about the sport that she had a pole vaulting pit built in her back yard last fall, ranks third nationally. The state-meet record is 13-3, set by McKinney's Britany Parker in 2005.
Rockwall's Shelby Kennard, who has cleared 12-7, should contend for a medal in 5A. Tyler Lee's Callie Griffin could push Weygandt. Griffin ranks second in the state, having cleared 13 feet.
