Considering this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Bernardo Mayer, the Brownsville Hanna pole vaulter has already exceeded any expectations he had coming into the 2007 season.
Two weeks ago at the Region IV-5A Meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio, Mayer cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to set a new personal best and clinch first place.
His vault, which improved three inches since he took top honors on April 14 in the District 32-5A meet at Sams Memorial Stadium, not only earned him a gold medal but also qualified him for the UIL State Track and Field Championships.
And while winning a medal at the state meet â€â€
