Record try looming for UC pole vaulter

After University City's Kevin Jones cleared 15 feet in the pole vault, he asked if the bar could be raised to 16.
Often in qualifying meets such as yesterday's section track and field prelims at Mt. Carmel High, officials will stop the competition once the nine qualifiers are determined.
Not this time.
Jones' wish was granted and he promptly soared above 16 feet. Buoyed by his success, he asked that the bar be placed at 16-4. He slid over that on his first try, equaling the fourth-best mark in section history.
On a roll, Jones, whose previous best was 15-8, had the bar set at a section record-equaling 16-8, barely missing on his third and final try.
