Freshman Flying High
Sami was sitting at my table at the elite competition at Reno. She had never competed and was nervous for her first meet the next day. Obviously her season is getting off to a great start! Nice job Sami

A Record and Moving Up on The All Time List!: At the Clark Massey Memorial Relays on Saturday, March 6 freshmen pole vaulter Sami Hartley broke the freshmen school record held by Katie Nishimura (1999) and Ashley McAllister (2001) of 9' 6" by vaulting 10' 0". Her 10' 0" clearance was also good enough to move her into 4th place all time in the pole vault. Fellow freshmen Veronica Stimson moved up to 5th on the all time list in the pole vault for the second straight week clearing 9' 0" at the same meet (Click For Girls All Time List). These two freshmen ladies combined efforts were good enough to take first place in the pole vault relay team competition against all other varsity competition. Looks like blue skies for Coach Taft for the next for years. Another mark to note was Alex Yu's 42' 1" triple jump. A very fine effort this early in the season.

Bella Vista High School in Sacramento, CA, is where Derek Miles went.
The guy coaching all those girls mentioned above is Clay Taft, who spearheaded a campaign to get a sweet all weather facility installed at the school as well as a vault facility with all the bells and whistles. Helluva nice guy to boot.

Speaking of Freshman Flying High, I've gotta give a shout out to my freshman stud girl, Ari Ince of Gonzales High. Ari cleared 11'0 to place 2nd last weekend at the Bastrop Invitational.

Her pr in 8th grade was 9'0. Oh yeah, did I mention she's 6'0 tall?
Forgot to mention that she was also the Youth Girls Junior Olympic Champion at AAU Jr. Olympics last summer:

Florida has a pretty good freshman as well. Daisy Gasser from Jacksonville has vaulted 11' this year and I got a chance to watch her vault at the FL Relays. She has a lot of potential, however she has a really long run, 18 steps. Watch for that name in the future.
The greatest gift I ever received was the look on a young vaulters' face after setting a PR!
