Vital Chiropractic

Chiropractic care is not simply adjusting the spine to relieve the neck and back pain of adults, but a lifelong practice that can tackle headaches, asthma, allergies and digestive disorders, says Dr. Cheryl Schmitt, who co-owns Mount Vernon’s Vital Chiropractic with husband Dr. Robert Schmitt.

“It’s not just, ‘Adjust me twice and I’m fixed’ ... If you have a spine, you can benefit from chiropractic care,’’ said Schmitt, who opened her office on Riverside Drive six years ago. Schmitt specializes in pregnancy and children’s chiropractic, with the goal to “teach more families to embrace it as part of their care,’’ she exclaims. Both she and her husband practice traditional chiropractics. Her philosophy: “We should be the master of what we do, and refer to others who are the master of what they do.’’

Schmitt was born and raised in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada, a farming community where her father grew grain. Her mother frequented a chiropractor to relieve headaches, and Cheryl began treatment at 4 for adjustments. “It was a normal thing to me,’’ she recalls. “I never thought about it.’’

Schmitt showed horses as a girl, and considered a career as a veterinarian. A month working in a veterinarian clinic killed that urge. “I couldn’t deal with it,’’ she remembers. “I was in charge of bagging and tagging the euthenized animals. It was more death to me than helping.’’

A visit to her first female chiropractor inspired Schmitt to change her career path. She met future husband, a Wisconsin native, while both studied at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Robert, who competed professionally as a knee boarder and nationally as a pole vaulter, was introduced to chiropractic care after breaking his back participating in a pole vault meet in college. She graduated in 2000.

The two Midwest natives set their sights on resettling on the west coast, and arrived in western Washington in a U-Haul with no job or place to live outside a hotel. The Schmitts picked an office space at 1509 Riverside Drive because of its inexpensive rent and centralized location. Another bonus is being able to bring their 2-year-old son to the office, where he interacts with children who are patients.

Schmitt estimates 70 to 75 percent of her patients come in with symptoms of health problems, the rest for wellness checkups; half of her clients are children. A recent patient was a two-year-old boy who had never slept through the night. After his first chiropractic adjustment, the boy’s mother reported that he awoke only once that night for 10 minutes, and then went right back to sleep.
“To see that is pretty incredible ... You can change their outlook on life,’’ Schmitt says.

Chiropractic treatment on pregnant women can shorten labor time, Schmitt said. She received an adjustment just after going into labor, which lasted only six hours. “So many women are told to not even have chiropractic care when they’re pregnant,’’ she exclaims.

A local challenge is “a tough medical community,’’ including pediatrics who are not open to chiropractic, said the doctor, adding, “It would benefit patients so much if we can work together.’’ Schmitt has immersed herself in the local business community as a member of Soroptimists of Mount Vernon, and served as president. She’s also a member of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
