Shelton senior wins pole vault
Metzger is area's only 4A track champion
BY GAIL WOOD
THE OLYMPIAN
PASCO -- With a state championship medal dangling from her neck, Shelton's Kristi Metzger admitted she no longer fears pole vaulting
Winning can do that.
Metzger won the 4A state championship Saturday, clearing 11 feet on her second attempt.
"I was scared to pole vault my freshman year," Metzger said. "I'd practice it, but I didn't do it in meets."
Metzger's older sister, Aubrey, pole vaulted at Shelton, pulling the younger Metzger into the event. Last year, Kristi Metzger broke her sister's school record of 10-6 and broke that with a 11-3 earlier this season.
Metzger, a senior who'll attend Northwest Nazarene on a track scholarship, highlighted the final day of the 4A state track-and-field championship at Edgar Brown Stadium. She advanced to state for the fourth straight year, her second in the pole vault.
"I'm happy I won, but I just wished I would have PRed," Metzger said.
