Becca Friday ran to the fastest time in the state this season in the 800 meters to highlight a four-school Northwest Conference track and field meet Wednesday at Civic Stadium.

Friday, a Bellingham sophomore, won the 800 in 2 minutes, 15.7 seconds.

Squalicum finished first as a team in the boys’ and girls’ meets. The Storm boys won with 77.5 points, ahead of second- place Bellingham (49.5), Sedro-Woolley (27.5) and Lynden Christian (26.5).

Sam Sampson (100 and pole vault) and Jesse Pots (shot put and discus) were double winners for the Storm.

Logan Darling won the 200 and 400 for Bellingham.

In the girls’ meet, Squalicum won with 68 points while Lynden Christian was second with 61, Bellingham third with 37 and Sedro-Woolley fourth with 23.

Bronwyn Crossman had the second-fastest time in the state this season in the 3,200 in 10:58.6.

FERNDALE, BLAINE SPLIT

The Golden Eagles’ boys won all the jumping events to lead the team to a win, and the Blaine girls won two of three relays and earned a win in the Northwest Conference meet that also featured Nooksack Valley at Blaine.

Chris Mallard won both the 100 and 200 for Ferndale, as did teammate Chantel Green for the girls. Ferndale also had two other double winners, with Jordan Crim winning the long jump and high jump and Tanya Bjornsson taking first in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Douglas Ramirez won the 800 and 1,600 for Blaine.

Nooksack Valley boys won all the throwing events, with Chris Mitchell winning the discus and javelin.

SEHOME FINISHES SECOND

The Mariners finished second to Burlington-Edison in both the boys’ and girls’ meets that also had Mount Vernon and Anacortes.

Stephen Ayers had impressive wins in both the discus and shot put. Ayers won the discus by almost 25 feet and took the shot put by almost eight feet. Sehome had the top four places in the shot put.

Other multiple winners for Sehome were Mason McHenry in the 800 and 1,600, and Annie Moore in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Fast track bridges Narrows

THE NEWS TRIBUNE
Published: March 30th, 2007 01:00 AM

For the last two years, the road to the Class 4A track and field boys and girls state titles has traveled through the Narrows League.
Wilson won the boys title in 2006, Gig Harbor in 2005.

And for the girls, Olympia won the state title in 2006, and Bellarmine took it all in 2005.

At the beginning of this track season, Narrows League teams look primed for another state title run, as several individuals hold state bests early on.

They include Wilson’s Chanel James in the 100 (12.04 seconds) and 200 (25.24) and Lincoln’s 800 relay team (1:48.0) for the girls. And in boys events, Sam Washington holds the state’s best mark in the shot put (59 feet), and Gig Harbor’s Charlie Williams (1,600 – 4.27.2.) and Mile Unterreiner (3,200 – 9.27.7) lead the distance events.

Narrows athletes also rank high in several other events.

Gig Harbor coach Kevin Eager said a primary reason Narrows League teams perform well at state is because of the depth of talent throughout the league.

“The Narrows League prepares you to do well at state,â€Â

ANACORTES SEAHAWKS
Coach: Case de Vries

Top athletes: Emily Fakkema, So., distance; Kaila Hammond, Jr., throws; Maren Hanson, Fr., distance; Kim Herrigstad, So., jumps, sprints; Kasie Walters, Jr., hurdles, sprints.

Outlook: Hammond is one of the top throwers in the Northwest Conference. She placed seventh in the shot put at state last spring and is Anacortes’ only returning state qualifier. The Seahawks have a fair amount of talent, but lack the depth to compete with the conference’s top teams.

BELLINGHAM RED RAIDERS
Coach: Bill McClement

Top athletes: Lily Vanderstaay, Jr., sprints, hurdles; Savannah Cuthill, Fr., sprints, hurdles; Linden Figgie, So., sprints, hurdles; Rachel Sager, So., sprints, hurdles; Bakima Ssebanakitta, So., sprints, hurdles; Lindsey Marti-nez, Jr., sprints, hurdles; Courtney Hotchkiss, Jr., sprints, hurdles; Tressa Angle, So., jumps; Jasmine Larson, Jr., jumps; Erin Peterson, So., jumps; Mollie Berres, So., jumps; Bryn Hubbard, PV; Meghan Griffin, So., throws; Morgan Keys, Jr., throws; Semhar Negassa, Sr., throws; Chantel Petty, So., throws; Nicole Parise, So., throws; Becca Friday, So., distance; Hannah Jensen, Jr., distance; Lauren North, Jr., distance; Ashley Dalton, Jr., distance; Kelsey Thomas, Fr., distance; Elena Robertson, So., distance; Miranda Hyldahl, So., distance.

Outlook: With such a large team, Bellingham should be one of the better squads in the conference. The Red Raiders have a strong pack of distance runners, led by Friday, who placed third at state in the 800 and second 1,600 last spring, and Jensen. Vanderstaay reached state in the 200 and is one of the NWC’s better sprinters.

BLAINE BORDERITES
Coach: Mike Grambo

Top athletes: Cassie Acidera, Jr., sprints; Julie Meaker, Sr., sprints; Lacey Montgomery, Jr.; hurdles,; Breanna Olason, So., sprints; Alisha Fisher, Sr., PV, sprints; Gaby Avena, So., throws; Robin Taylor, Fr., PV.

Outlook: The Borderites have four returnees with state experience. Meaker was third in the 400, Montgomery took sixth in the 300 hurdles, Fisher placed eighth in the pole vault and Olason competed in the 100. Blaine’s girls went undefeated in the Whatcom County League last spring, but the NWC is deeper and tougher. Still, the Borderites should be very competitive.

BURLINGTON-EDISON TIGERS
Coach: Kevin Gugdel

Top athletes: Danielle Nordlund, Jr., sprints, jumps; Kinsey Davis, So., jumps, sprints; Anna Latham, Sr., jumps; Emily Bylin, Jr., jumps; Anne Barnett, Jr., throws; Julie Byle, Jr., throws; Savanha Chapman, So., throws; Liisa Cushing, Jr., distance; Lacey Breckenridge, So., hurdles; Krista Studebaker, Jr., sprints; Teira Graham, So., throws; Alicia Shapiro, So., sprints; Sarah Berentson, Jr., sprints; Jamie Depree, Sr., jumps, sprints; Bri Thomas, Sr., jumps, PV.

Outlook: The Tigers have one of the most accomplished groups of individuals returning four state competitors. Davis qualified in two events, the 400 and long jump, and so did Barnett, the shot put and taking sixth in the discus. Nordlund and Cushiing are also back. The Tigers are deep and will finish near the top of the NWC standings.

FERNDALE GOLDEN EAGLES
Coach: Ted Genger

Top athletes: Deana Kirscheman, Jr., throws; Lauren Marks, So., high jump; Elizabeth Mattila, Sr., hurdles; Sarah Viera, Jr., distance; Tanya Bjornsson, So., hurdles; Kayti Christianson, Sr., throws; Chantel Green, Jr., sprints.

Outlook: Mattila nearly won the 300 hurdles at the state meet last season, losing by .08 seconds, and was sev-enth in the 100 hurdles. Bjornsson is a fast hurdler, too. Green went to state in the 100 and should be even faster this spring. Ferndale has good depth and the Golden Eagles should be one of the Northwest Conference’s better teams.

LYNDEN LIONS
Coach: Layne Hutchins

Top athletes: Carissa Diacogiannis, Sr., jumps, hurdles; Lindsey Diacogiannis, Sr., javelin, hurdles; Becki Lindquist, Jr., jumps, hurdles; Jeni Maakad, Jr., throws; Jill Beanblossom, So., sprints; Talia Godard, So., sprints; Lindsey Langstraat, So., distance; Tessa Godard, Fr., sprints; Hannah VanZanten, Fr., distance; Karla Witte, Fr., distance; Miranda O’Neill, sprints.

Outlook: Linquist is a versatile athlete. Last week she won the triple jump, placed second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 400. The Lions 4x200 relay of Carissa Diacogiannis, Tessa Godard, Beanblossom and O’Neill is quick. Lynden doesn’t have the depth some teams do, but the Lions will be competitive.

LYNDEN CHRISTIAN LYNCS
Coach: Kent DeHoog

Top athletes: Heather Sebens, Sr., hurdles; Casie Rodenburger, Sr., throws; Shanna Honcoop, Sr., sprints; Meg Ryan, Sr., distance; Alicia Tremaine, Jr., sprints; Roxanne Mouw, Jr., sprints; Alisha Vander Laan, Jr., sprints; Kristi Gross, Jr., PV; Michelle Steiger, Jr., distance; Carrie Beamer, Fr., distance.

Outlook: DeHoog has one of LC’s largest teams in years, with entries for every event. Gross and Steiger are returning state competitors. Steiger should be very competitive in the 3,200 after placing third in the state cross country meet last fall and Beamer was 10th. Honcoop is entering her fourth season of being one of the Lyncs’ top sprinters. LC should do well in the 1A postseason.

MERIDIAN TROJANS
Coach: Patrick Ames

Top athletes: Danelle Roosendaal, Sr., jumps; Emily Byrum, So., triple jump; Sarah Capp, Jr., sprints, long jump; Miranda Heslep, Jr., 800, 1600; Haley Pratt, Jr., distance; Alex Hull, So., hurdles, high jump.

Outlook: The Trojans have five state competitors returning. Heslep leads the way with an eighth-place finish in the 800. Meridian can hang with the larger schools and will excel in the 1A postseason.

MOUNT BAKER MOUNTAINEERS
Coach: Colin Buckley

Top athletes: Michael Urbano, So., distance; Alysha Noble, So., distance; Sierra Brisky, Jr., distance; Kyla Rohde, Sr., hurdles; Mikaela Yeomans, So., hurdles; Mackenzie Gabl, Fr., javelin; Monica Alfredsen, So., jumps.

Outlook: The Mountaineers don’t have a whole lot of depth and that will hurt them when it comes to team scores. Urbano is one of the Northwest Conference’s better distance runners.

MOUNT VERNON BULLDOGS
Coach: Dave Riddle

Top athletes: Tia Brogna, sprints; Kathryn Benson, sprints; Kayla Johnston, distance; Caitlin Gusa, hurdles; Adrienne Ridenhour, jumps; Jamie Hughs, PV; Danielle Kaufman, throws; Kathi Wocken, javelin.

Outlook: The Bulldogs have good talent and depth, making them a competitive team. Brogna and Gusa each won two individual events last week in a meet with Meridian and Sedro-Woolley. Mount Vernon hasn’t had an athlete qualify for state since 2004.

NOOKSACK VALLEY PIONEERS
Coach: Robb Myhre

Top athletes: Madison DeBruin, Sr., distance; Courtney Bertels, Jr., javelin; Kaitlin Roller, Jr., jumps; Abby Chapman, So., PV; Danelle Himango, So., throws; Bailey DeBruin, Fr., distance; Shani Johnson, Fr., javelin; Melissa Burke, So., javelin.

Outlook: The Pioneers have good distance runners, as evidenced by the school’s third-place trophy from the state cross country meet in the fall. Myhre expects Chapman and Himango to be standouts.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY CUBS
Coach: Tim Larson

Top athletes: Emily Warman, Jr., jumps, sprints; Hillary Young, So., hurdles; Kendra Wilson, So., hurdles; Caitlin Ovenell, Fr., jumps; Marisa Marske, Jr., sprints, hurdles; Sadie Hanks, Fr., sprints; Amy Halstad, Fr., distance; Jessica DeBoer, Fr., distance; Ashley Fischer, throws.

Outlook: Warman is one of the Northwest Conference’s top triple jumpers. She placed eighth at state last spring. The Cubs are young and continuing to improve.

SEHOME MARINERS
Coach: Jen Leita

Top athletes: Jordan Billiot, Jr., sprints; Lauren Bruce, Fr., distance; Natalie Day, Jr., hurdles; Hailey Gibbons, Fr., distance; Erin Keyes, Sr., jumps; Molly LeCompte, Fr., distance; Alex Marcus, So., sprints, distance; Han-nah McKenzie, So., distance; Annie Moore, Fr., distance; Hannah O’Neal, Sr., distance; Marie Smith, Sr., throws; Mari Tarleton, Jr., sprints; Brittany Todhunter, Jr., throws; Eirin Waade, Sr., jumps, hurdles.

Outlook: The Mariners are one of the favorites to win the Northwest Conference title. They are deep in all the events: sprints, distance, jumps and throws. Sehome is loaded with distance runners from its state championship cross country team. Todhunter should get back to state in the discus and shot put. Tarleton went to state last spring in the 100.

SQUALICUM STORM
Coach: Chris Benson

Top athletes: Emily Shick, Sr. distance; Bronwyn Crossman, Jr., distance; Gylanny Crossman, So., distance; Tia Herdman, So., distance; Sarah Norman, Sr., sprints, jumps; Whitney Olson, sprints, jumps, Sr.; Sophie Curl, So., sprints, distance; Courtney Violette, Sr., PV; Diane Dentiger, Jr., throws; Molly Mendehlson, So., sprints.

Outlook: With a state championship cross country team on the squad, the Storm have plenty of talent and depth in the middle and long distance events. Crossman, who won the individual cross country title in the fall, again will contend for first in the 3,200 and Schick could get another top-five finish, too. The same goes in the 1,600. Curl is excelling in the 800.

Pirate tracksters excel

BENTON CITY - Four Bickleton Pirates claimed first place honors at a four-team, non-scoring meet at Kiona-Benton this past Tuesday.
"A small four-way meet but with big results is how I would describe our day in Benton City," said Coach Darrell Lang.
Pole vaulter Eric Meader garnered a personal record in tandem with his first place finish, propelling one foot higher than ever before at 11 feet with his first ever first place effort.
Bickleton teammate Alejandra Molena earned first place honors in both of her events, throwing 86-7 in the discus and 28-11 in the shot.
"Alejandra was a double winner for the first time in her career, as all of the throwers had a great day," Lang said.
Bickleton thrower Eric Hess earned first place honors in the shotput, throwing 44-7. His 125-0 throw in the discus earned him second place honors.
Bickleton runner Danielle Raschko's 13:13.5 clocking in the 3,200-meter run earned her a first place finish. Her 6:21.2 clocking in the 1,600-meter run earned her third place honors.
"Danielle had a hard day, as she doubled running the 3,200 meter and then the 1,600 just about 30 minutes later, but managed a first and third (place)," Lang said.
Lady Pirate Johanna Jensen earned two second place finishes at the meet in the long jump and 4x200 relay.
Bickleton's Nakai Kibby earned second place honors in the pole vault, catapulting 6-6.
Lang said, "We picked up five first place finishes, six (second place finishes) and seven personal records. Not bad, considering we were in 32 degree wind chill for practice on Monday."
Bickleton's next meet is this Saturday in Goldendale at the Simcoe Invite.

Spring sports preview: Track and field

Mar 28 2007

By CASEY OLSON

The Mirror

The TJ girls haven’t lost a track and field meet since 2004. The Raiders finished last season as the South Puget Sound League Central Division champions with a 6-0 record and finished 7-0-1 in 2005.

This year the Raiders will have to contend with teams like Tahoma, Kentridge and Federal Way in the revamped SPSL North.

“Taking on teams from the SPSL North for the first time will be a change, however our team this year should be very competitive in this new league,â€Â

Coupeville track meet hampered by weather

By Tim Adams
Mar 24 2007

Early spring track meets at Mickey Clark Field in Coupeville often result in the weather being as much of a challenge to the athletes as the distance of a race or the length of a jump.

Thursday’s dual meet against Archbishop Murphy was no exception and competitors battled chilly temperatures and soggy footing.

In the end, the Coupeville boys won the meet 66-59, while the eight-person girls team went down to defeat 85-54.

“Spring track at Coupeville is great, isn’t it,â€Â

ML track features new faces

ML’s Daryl Stolworthy lands hard in last Thursday’s long jump event.
By NEIL PIERSON
Staff Reporter

Medical Lake track and field coach Phil Tennison has a lot to be excited about this season.

Four athletes with state meet experience return to guide the boys team. The girls team has doubled in size, with 25 athletes figuring to see varsity action. And while there’s a host of new faces on both squads, Tennison sees plenty of athleticism and resilience that could pay off for the Cardinals.

Junior Ty Souders returns in the 400 meters, where he finished fourth in the state last season. Perhaps the boys’ best all-around athlete, Souders will also be a big part of the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams and figures to run both hurdling events as well.

Senior David Jacob, a two-time state participant, highlights the long-distance events. In 2006, he was fourth in the mile run and sixth in the 800 meters at state. He’ll also be part of the 4x400 squad and run the two-mile race on occasion, Tennison said.

Injuries cost Daryl Stolworthy spots at state in the last two seasons, but the senior is healthy this spring and looking to end his high school career in style. Along with running the 100 and 400 sprint events, both hurdling events and both relays, he’s the team’s top long jumper.

Josh Thompson had a breakout effort last year, qualifying for the state high jump event as a freshman. He also figures into the middle-distance lineup and led the team with a 133-foot, 5-inch toss in the javelin at last Thursday’s season-opening jamboree.

The boys have depth in the sprints, though everyone besides Souders and Stolworthy are unproven. Freshmen Matthew Friddle, Conrad Quinn and Zachary Wilson, sophomores Ladarrious Costict and Kevin Ramson, junior Steve Chartz and seniors Luke Garza and Nathan Jones all figure into the mix.

Tennison also likes what he sees from freshman Jarrod Swanson, who recorded a team-best time in the 100 meters (12.0 seconds) last Thursday.

Other long-distance runners are freshmen Jordan Jacob, Sean Lane and Zach Empkey, sophomores Brett Buntin and Sam Daly, and senior Jordan Hogan.

Junior Jordan Mueller is coming along quickly in the hurdles and should have the team’s top times in the 110- and 300-meter events. Costict, Souders, Stolworthy and junior Josh Yoder will also be in the picture.

Senior Joe Hinson has shown improvement in the shot put and javelin, and could be the team’s best thrower in 2007. Juniors Joe Davison and Phillip Provoncha, along with Quinn and Lane, fill out the throwers lineup.
While Thompson is ML’s only serious competitor in the high jump, Stolworthy, Swanson and Ramson should all get chances in the long and triple jumps.

Junior Shane Forrester came on strong in the pole vault last year, with Chartz and Hinson also trying the event for the first time.

No one on the girls team has previous state experience, though that figures to change in 2007. Senior Ally Ganyo might have the best chance to break ML’s drought, having run solid early times in the mile and 300-meter hurdles.

The sprint events figure to be wide open. Freshmen Lauren Allgood, Michelle Chartz, Ashlee Davis and Kaitlin McNeill, sophomores Cassie Litzinger, Mary Millyard, Marissa Propeck and Angela Storme, and junior Randi Ruggles are battling for spots at the moment.

Tennison hasn’t set lineups for the relays yet.

“In the relays, we’re just trying to see who’s compatible with each other,â€Â

Timeout ...
with Alyson PIccolo, senior, Stanwood track and field

Last summer Alyson Piccolo combined two of her passions, service and sports, when she took a church mission trip to Jamaica. Working with kids ages 4 to 12 in the village of Southfield, she led a running camp for the energetic but somewhat confused youngsters.

"It was really hard to teach them something when they didn't understand the point of running (for competition)," said Piccolo, one of Stanwood's top all-time distance runners. "They were just more into chasing each other. It was challenging, but it was a ton of fun."

And that's exactly why Piccolo runs - because it's challenging and fun.

Coach's corner Piccolo, a four-year letter winner in track and cross country, is a two-time co-captain in both sports. Stanwood track coach Paul Johnson called her "a tireless worker who has won our most inspirational award several times. She is also a fabulous competitor, someone who never gives up."

Go the distance Piccolo qualified for the state cross country meet four times and has gone to the state track championships twice. She got into distance running in the seventh grade because she liked the Stanwood Middle School distance coach, Lara Brown, who was also her teacher. "It kind of just fell into place for me," said Piccolo.

Look ahead The most important qualities for a runner are dedication, self-motivation and a positive attitude when things go wrong, Piccolo said: "You have to think to the future. You can't just get down over one little injury." This past fall in cross country, Piccolo pulled her groin muscle and strained her knee but managed to recover and advance to state.

Adversity just struck again: She was diagnosed with a stress fracture Monday and will be out indefinitely, coach Johnson said.

Stick to the routine The night before a big meet, Piccolo strictly follows the same pattern: 1. Eat a salad and penne pasta with meat sauce for dinner, 2. Take an ice bath at 7:30 p.m., 3. Drink a smoothie and eat half a bagel before bedtime. Said Piccolo, "It's kind of weird, but it works for me."

The great outdoors When she takes a rare break from running but still wants to stay active, Piccolo loves to zoom around on a four-wheeler or go pheasant hunting with her dad.
