Grizzlies sweep up County meet
By Ray Ryan - Daily World correspondent

DAILY WORLD / LOUIE TRAUB Hoquiam’s Amanda Berndt, right, edges out Aberdeen’s Jenny Voss at the finish line of the girls 4x100-meter relay at Saturday’s Grays Harbor Championships track meet at Sea Breeze Oval in Hoquiam.

Sweeping up more than half the available gold medals, Hoquiam’s boy and girl tracksters copped both ends of the Grays Harbor County track championships Saturday at Hoquiam’s Sea Breeze Oval.
The Grizzlies outpointed Elma, 195 to 1571/2, to prevail in the boys’ competition. Hoquiam scored one point less in the girls’ meet, but that was enough to turn back Aberdeen’s 128.
Hoquiam spikers bagged nine of the 17 boys’ firsts and 10 of the 18 top spots in the girls’ competition.
Elma cut in for its share of the honors, however, by accounting for three of the five meet records set and producing the meet’s top individual scorer in Christian Stark.
The latter prevailed solidly in both sprints and both hurdles for a haul of four gold medals and set a new meet record of 15.0 with his runaway win of the high hurdles.
Other Eagle record-setters were Jordan Craig with a 181-1 fling of the boys’ javelin and Jade Haas, who spanned 17-2 in the girls’ long jump.
Mackenzie Smith, who as usual had the biggest part of Hoquiam’s gold medal haul, bagged a meet record of 9-0 in the pole vault.
The versatile senior also prevailed in the high jump and javelin and took the bronze medal on the tail end of a 1-2-3 HHS sweep of the girls’ 300 hurdles. Her three gold medals also represented successful title defenses.
DAILY WORLD / LOUIE TRAUB Hoquiam’s Izzy Chavez helps break down the pole vaulting equipment following Saturday’s all-county meet in Hoquiam. Chavez won the event with a vault of 13 feet 3 inches.
Smith’s teammates Nychele Carley, who successfully defended her title, and Emily Wood ran 1-2 in that one.
The other record-breaker was North Beach’s Tashia DeLaCruz, whose 120-10 fling of the discus gave a repeat title as well as a new mark.
The Grizzlies also had their usual quota of double winners.
Distance ace Roy Stansell captured the 1600 and 800, turning back Elma’s Mike Vest in them both, then ran third in the 3200 as Elma’s Cody Sisco repeated his 2006 title. Vest collected his third silver medal in that one.
Seth Ronk made his customary medal haul in the weights with two golds and a silver. He popped the shot an excellent 50-9 and took the discus at 153-5.
The record javelin toss by Elma’s Craig denied Ronk a third gold.
On the girls’ side, Hoquiam freshman Kelsea Williams won the two longest races and was runner-up to teammate Carly White in the 800.
The 3200 was the only event returning three-event distance champ Tess Grannemann, recovering from a broken foot, entered. Tess led narrowly for much of the race before Williams outkicked her in the final stretch.
Hoquiam’s girls got other wins from Amanda Berndt in the 200 (she also got a relay gold and a silver in the 100) and both relays.
Berndt’s relay gold came on a come-from-behind effort to nip Aberdeen’s Jenny Voss by inches at the tape in the 4x100.
The Cat Ladies had led almost all the way after Justine Sturm gave them a solid lead on the opening leg.
Sturm was another double winner, prevailing in the 100 sprint and 100 hurdles.
The Cat Ladies also got firsts from Alex Akerlund in the 400 and their 4x400 relay unit.
Also, AHS senior Breezy Wentz popped the shot a big 38-8 to prevail over North Beach’s Cheresse Weidman, last year’s state class B runner-up, who tossed an excellent 37-0.
Emily Kramer was Montesano’s lone winner of the day with a 33-41/4 triple jump.
On the boys’ side, Hoquiam junior Izzy Chavez repeated as pole vault champ with a fine 13-3 clearance. Izzy also gave a new meet record try at 13-7 a good wrestle.
Ben Eaton successfully defended his long jump title and Scott Morrison took the high jump gold for another pair of Grizzly firsts.
And Roy Erhart, the talented transfer from Anchorage, Alaska, won the 400 handily in a fine 52.1 and also anchored a runaway HHS win of the 4x100 relay.
Little Wishkah, one of the smallest school in the field, surprised by fielding a 4x400 boys’ relay team that virtually ran off and hid.
Derek Jurasin, who anchored that relay effort, also took the triple jump with a fine leap of 41-81/2.
Wishkah had some key operatives missing, notably Carly Stone who is the state’s leading 1B shot putter, but is presently sidelined with a broken wrist.
Montesano’s Jake Vetter, the county’s only reigning state champion (2A high jump) missed the meet due to family activities.
The meet was co-sponsored by The Daily World and Anchor Bank.
Boys
Hoquiam 195, Elma 1571/2, Montesano 64, Wishkah 601/2, Aberdeen 441/2, North Beach 401/2, Ocosta 8, North River 4

Bickleton's Raschko earns two victories
Story by: Lynda Jo Gross
Date Published to Web: 4/13/2007
COWICHE - Bickleton's Danielle Raschko earned two first place finishes at a Highland meet this past Thursday.
Raschko placed first in the 3,200 meter run, clocking in at 13:38, and first in the 800 meter, clocking in at 2:59.
According to Coach Darrell Lang, the weather turned from absolutely beautiful to windy and cold, challenging Bickleton's runners.
That wasn't the only challenge. The Pirates just returned from spring break and the focus in practice has been all about "getting back into routine."
For two Pirates, perhaps spring break was just the refresher they needed. Both James Rasmussen and Tricia McBride earned their first ever victories.
Rassmussen threw the javelin 118-6 for his first place effort and McBride catapulted 6-6 in the pole vault for hers.
Bickleton's Patrick Maeder also claimed first place honors in the pole vault, vaulting 9-6. Maeder earned second place honors in the 400 meter dash as well, clocking in at 1:03.40.
In the 4x400 relay, Rasmussen, Maeder, Dillon Clingon and Orion Yosele ran to a second place finish, clocking in at 4:30.
Junior Hernandez earned two second place finishes for Bickleton, clocking in at 11:31 in the 3,200 meter run and 5:14 in the 1,600 meter run.
Teammate Eric Hess claimed first place honors in the discus, throwing 122-8 and second place honors in the shotput, throwing 43-1.
Nakai Kibby earned second place honors in the girls' shot-put, throwing 27-6.
Bickleton's 4x100 meter relay team comprised of Raschko, Phylicia Pearson, Chelsey Mercer and Johanna Jensen overcame a bad pass to claim second place honors. The team clocked in at 2:11.20. With his eye on State, Lange says he believes the team has the potential to clock in under two minutes. "We're looking to improve that time," he said.
Pearson also claimed third place honors in the javelin and high jump. Pearson threw 76-3 and jumped 3-10.
Bickleton's Jensen placed third in the long jump, leaping 12-10.
Teammate Alejandra Molina also claimed third place honors in the discus, throwing 78-2.
Bickleton's regular schedule has been changed and the team next competes on Tuesday, Apr. 17.

MOSES LAKE -- The Moses Lake Chiefs hosted the Davis Pirates and the Walla Walla Blue Devils in a Columbia Basin League meet Thursday, coming away with an 80-63 victory over Davis.
Returning from injury to lead Moses Lake over the Pirates was Aaron Wafer. The Moses Lake sprinter edged teammate David Gilman and Davis' Demitri Mandapat in a very competitive 100-meter dash. Wafer's time of 11.47 was a step better than Gilman's 11.73, while Mandapat was right with Gilman with an 11.78.
Wafer was also victorious in the long jump with a mark of 20-6, and finished second in the 200 dash and 400 dash. In both the 200 and 400, Walla Walla's Andrew Battenberg outran Wafer for first place.
"With the times he's posting, being out two weeks, he's right there," said Moses Lake coach Nicki Weiland when asked if Wafer was still feeling the effects of his injury. "I think he'll do fine."
Another Chief who shined Thursday was Billy Matthews. The Moses Lake senior finished first in the discus with a throw of 151-00, a personal best in a high school meet for Matthews. After his winning throw, Matthews was congratulated by teammates for his effort.
Despite the winning effort, Weiland expects even more from Matthews before the season is over.
"I think Billy has a lot more than what we're seeing," said the Moses Lake coach. "I'll be surprised if he's not in the 160's and beyond. He has the talent and the heart."
Harman finished second in the discus, and was the winner in the shot put with a toss of 48-03. Matthews was third in the shot put with a throw of 44-06.

In girls' action, Josie Daschel was Moses Lake's only winner, taking top honors in the discus with a throw of 89-11. Carolyn Matthews was third in the discus, recording a mark of 87-09.
