In 1981, Bill Daprano went to the U.S. National Masters Championships in Atlanta to watch one of his athletic heroes, Bob Richards.

Daprano, 54 at the time, was a college hurdler at the University of Georgia at about the same time Richards was winning Olympic gold medals in the pole vault in 1948 and 1952.

As he watched the meet unfold, Daprano decided that he could do as well as the men on the track. So, spurred on by disgust that he’d allowed his weight to balloon to more than 190 pounds â€â€
