Hey, I just graduated from HS and I'm heading to Idaho State University. Just wondering if anyone has any pointers for being a college athlete and just any info on what it's like in college. THanks

I hope you're kidding, right? My thoughts are that college is for learning, growing wiser, and becoming a better person as a whole. I practiced too much and my learning suffered. . . I really wish that there could be some even ground. But on the positive side, I coach at a University where I try to stress that school is the reason for being there and that pole vaulting is for fun. An athlete is no good to me if they flunk out of school, or are having a difficult time getting through. Definately make sure your school work is done prior to putting pole vaulting in front of your education. Keep in mind that being part of a college program is an experience that most people don't get to have. Don't take it for granted. Beam

And don't think Dave Nielsen doesn't value the value of a college education. I was once talking to a heralded athlete who sort of "washed out" up there and he seemed just as happy that she had straight A's as he would have been if she were conference champ.

Oh yeah, to answer the original question . . .

Don't ever fall behind.
Be prepared BEFORE lecture.
Copy and organize all your notes the same day you wrote them.
Don't be afraid to ask questions of the intructor.
Remember that having fun doesn't necessarily mean goofing off.
If you have a drink, make sure that you know and trust EVERYONE who handled it before you.
Don't be afraid to spend your own money on poles if the school can't afford the one you need.

Hi, I am a vaulter at Idaho State too and I will be in my 5th year this coming season. My biggest advice is to have fun no matter what you're doing, cuz it goes fast! If you need anything let me know!
