Rice vaulter breaks 36-year-old school record

Chronicle News Services

AUSTIN — Pole vaulter Jason Colwick broke the oldest track and field mark in the Rice record book by clearing 5.5 meters at the Texas Relays on Saturday.

On his first attempt, Colwick topped Dave Roberts' vault of 5.49 meters in 1972. Clemson's Mitch Greeley missed the bar three times at 5.5 meters (18 feet, 2½ inches) to give Colwick the title.

Colwick is a sophomore from San Marcos.

FSN will broadcast the Tx Relays in May. Hopefully they'll have an "awesome" behind the pit shot of it.

It was a great afternoon for the Rice vaulters, not only did Jason clear 5.55 and break the school record, but earlier in the afternoon Senior Rachel Greff set a school record at 4.20 and it was her birthday! With the leading male and female DI vaulters in the nation currently, it looks like Coach Butler may actually be on to something in Houston!
