only two years, but you are still able to compete for two more years!

JC's

Unread postby ~jj~ » Mon Oct 11, 2004 10:44 pm

Community colleges, commonly known as Junior colleges, or JC's, are two year schools that prepare kids for advancement into 4year schools. They usually offer tech courses that prepare kids for direct advancement into the working world, and or general studies type courses that most college majors require the first two years in a major program.
In California approximatly 100 JC's serve approximalty 70,000 students.
The only requirments to attend full time, are that you have to be 18 years of age, or have graduated from HS. The thing that makes JC's so popular is the price. The cost per semester unit in California, is currently approximalty $17 per unit in state, and only $150 per unit out of state. Community colleges mostly serve the HS graduates of a local area. But some schools such as Cuesta, because of its location, and academic reputation, have kids from all over the country.
Approximalty 75 JC's in California have track and field programs. This of course makes it very competitive. In the pole vault event the state JC meet will be won at approximalty 12' for the girls and 16' or 17' for the boys.
Go check out the Cuesta web site for more information www.cuesta.org

When you enroll full time in a junior college, your NCAA clock starts ticking. If you compete JUCO you use a season of eligibility.

clearing house

Unread postby ~jj~ » Tue Oct 12, 2004 10:32 am

The key word is full time. You can go part time forever and build up credits with out hurting your eligability in the NCAA as long as you don't compete.
It is also wise to make sure you make NCAA clearing house right out of HS. Otherwise you must get your AA (two year degree).

Well... on the way up we stopped in Corsicana, TX to drop off our top pad for repairs. While we were there we ran into Carl and Jeff Erickson, so we BS'd for awhile. Left there and made it to Effingham, IL at midnight. Drove to Champaign in the morning.

Sunday we left Champaign and drove to St. Charles, MO to drop off a pole at my school. Then we drove to Jonesboro, AR. Monday we drove back down to Corsicana to pick up the top pad.

So not sure how many hours total... a lot :P No stops in Fort Worth this time. Next trip ;)

Effingham!

Unread postby ~jj~ » Wed Oct 13, 2004 12:00 pm

I once Broke down in Effingham on my way back to SIU from UofI.
I spent the night in my car next to I-57, and then went to the junker car lot the next morning to get a drive shaft.
Total cost in 1975 $15.
Good thing I had my tools in the trunk.

Most of the best Junior Colleges are west coast. Mt SAC is usually pretty good as well as Clakamas, I would have to say the best though is Cuesta. A bunch of good vaulters have gone through there and it like the best place in the world to be.

I like Lindenwood, although they are NAIA. Lano is a great guy. LON

NAIA is another great option to consider if you are looking to go JUCO. Easy to transfer in and out. It's kind of like JUCO but you can stay 4+ years if you want :P

advancement

I agree! Not everyone is ready for the full blown experience of NCAA right out of HS. With all its rules and regulations the NCAA is kind of a pain in the aXX anyway!!
Both NAIA and JC offer alternatives.
At Cuesta for instance, I tell my people we are simply a spring board into a 4 year school. So if they come, and do a good job in the class room, and on the track, we can almost always find them a spot at a 4 year school. Be forwarned however, Do not come to Cuesta unless you want to work hard, and have fun. If your not serious - I'm not interested! If your too much of a partyer- I'm not interested, If you don't go to class- I'm not interested! In the past two years we have placed kids into Georgetown, Cal Poly, Sac State, and UC Davis, Long Beach St, and Chico St. They all worked like crazy to get better. They all got AA degrees, and they all got scholarship $$$.
In fact, last year we had such a good season of placing kids, that only one kid is back this year.
So it looks like I'm starting all over.
Right on!
:P
