WSU 2005 All-American pole vaulter Tyson Byers missed almost all of last season with a hamstring injury.
However, it was impossible to tell on Saturday at the Fifth Annual WSU Indoor Open. Byers won the men’s pole vault with a WSU indoor facility record, meet record and NCAA Provisional Qualifying height of 17 feet, 3/4 inches.
“I was trying to make a little higher height,â€Â

Jodi Unger matched her personal-best pole vault with a height of 13 feet, 6 1/4 inches to increase her previous provisional mark. Unger said she will take a week off from competition because an MRI discovered last week she had a tear in her left thigh.

"I'm going to focus on rehabbing it to get ready to go to New York," Unger said.

Teammate Stephanie Irwin also provisionally qualified with a vault of 13-0 1/4.

UT Arlington's Wade Hayes has hardly ever pole vaulted in college - but you know what? He's pretty good
By Pegasus News wire

UT Arlington sophomore Wade Hayes had competed in just one college track meet prior to last week's Arkansas Invitational. Eight days later, the Class 3A state champion from Bonham has found he can vault at the Division I level.

Hayes cleared 4.95 meters (16-02.75) to take second place in the pole vault at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock Friday.

Husker freshman sets personal best in pole vault win
By KEN HAMBLETON / Lincoln Journal Star

Track uniforms are what, about the same thickness as human skin.

And somehow that silly millimeter of fabric tipped the the bar that was raised 17 feet, 4¾ inches over the pole vault pit when Nebraska freshman Seth Burney made his final attempt of the day.

“It kind of makes you angry and it kind of gets you excited all at the same time,â€Â

RENO, Nevada - In second and final day action in the 17th Annual Pole Vault Summit, a host of University of Oregon pole vaulters soared to strong marks in their season opener Saturday in the Grand Sierra Convention Center.

Senior Emily Enders led the Duck women’s squad with a final clearance of 13-3 1/2 (4.05m) - a four-inch indoor personal best that moved her into a tie for fourth all-time in school history.

The Snohomish, Wash., native and two-time NCAA outdoor qualifier owned a previous indoor best of 12-11 1/2 (3.95m) from 2006.

Also Saturday, freshman Eniko Eros made her debut for the Ducks and cleared 12-3 1/2 (3.75m), while sophomore Tara Rhein was scheduled to compete later Saturday evening.

On the men’s side, redshirt senior David Moore posted the best result of the day for the UO men (15-7 (4.75m)), and other Ducks that posted marks included freshmen Colin Witter-Tilton and Brian McGinty (15-3 (4.65m)).

Earlier in the day, redshirt sophomore Adam Redmond and freshman Marshall Ackley no-heighted, while freshman Ashton Eaton was scheduled to compete later Saturday evening.

The day before on Friday, senior Tommy Skipper led collegians in the invitational section and ranked fifth overall (18-0 1/2).

The four-time NCAA champion’s mark +18-foot mark was the 13th of his indoor collegiate career.

Looking ahead to next week, a large contingent of men and women will compete in the University of Washington Invitational, Fri.-Sat., Jan. 26th-27th in Seattle.

Track and field notebook Inspired Gallaher
Monday, January 22, 2007
DOUG BINDER
At the Pole Vault Summit, held annually in Reno, Nev., pole vaulters take center stage and have the spotlight all to themselves.

Boisterous crowds -- many of them other vaulters -- spur on athletes with rhythmic clapping while music blares inside a theater at the Grand Sierra Resort hotel. Friday night, the top 10 vaulters competing in the elite sections were treated like rock stars. On Saturday, 15 runways were kept busy all day long.

It's like a convention for pole vaulting. This year's event included 2,200 competitors of all ages. There were also various classes and clinics.

"On one hand it's easy to do well because it's such an inspiring atmosphere," Concordia University junior Jessie Gallaher said. "But at the same time there's a lot of pressure because everyone's watching you. And everyone knows when you've messed up."

Gallaher won the women's top college section Saturday with an indoor personal best of 13 feet, 71/2 inches -- making her the collegiate leader at all levels so far this season. Gallaher is the reigning NAIA outdoor national champion. Her clearance qualifies her for both the NAIA Indoor National Championships and the USA Track and Field Indoor National Championships.

Gallaher had a seat on the stage to watch the top vaulters on Friday.

"It's very emotional," she said. "Everyone gets inspired. Then you go to sleep dreaming about how you're going to do (the next day)."

Gallaher, who is coached by Willamette Valley Striders coach Rick Baggett, is on the cusp of her first 14-foot clearance.

"It's just a matter of cleaning up a few things until I'm there," Gallaher said.

Oregon's four-time national champion, Tommy Skipper, had a spot in Friday's limelight and placed fifth in the elite section -- first among collegians -- clearing 18-1/2. Two former Oregon vaulters, Becky Holiday (14-5 1/4) and Nikki McEwen (14-1 1/4), placed third and sixth, respectively, in the women's elite competition.

Oregon senior Emily Enders cleared 13-31/2, bettering her personal best by four inches and moving to fourth on the Ducks' all-time list. Also Saturday, freshman Eniko Eros made her debut for the Ducks and cleared 12-31/2. For the men, redshirt senior David Moore cleared 15-7.

Facilities update: The first 110-foot light poles were installed at Hayward Field this week, part of a $3.4 million lighting improvement project that will get the track ready to meet the demands of TV coverage when the 2008 Olympic Trials come to Eugene in June of 2008. Eight light poles and a total of 540 halide lamps will brighten Hayward Field and enable the venue to host televised meets at night. . . .

In her first competitive meet since the spring of 2005, Jackie Dvoracek won the pole vault championship for the Coyotes. Dvoracek cleared 10-feet-6 inches to beat the competition. Dvoracek missed all of last year after redshirting because of having shoulder surgery.

Scot sets new record

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 1:25 PM CST

MONMOUTH - Monmouth track coach Roger Haynes views the Fighting Scots' first three indoor meets of 2007 as glorified practices, but that didn't stop two of his athletes from breaking school records at the season-opening Prairie Fire Quad, which was hosted by Knox College on Saturday.

In the pole vault, Jessica White shattered her previous best by nearly a foot, clearing 11'5-3/4 to win the event over three teammates.

Her provisional-qualifying mark broke Christina Reiner's 2005 record by nearly eight inches.

"We talked after the meet about how the two records represented two sides of a coin," said Roger Haynes. "Jeff really put in a lot of offseason work and really earned his accomplishment. Jess is pretty solid technically, which is what allowed her to do so well."
