Props to Derek for being able to balance being one of the top vaulters in the world and being a phenomenal coach at the same time! Two college girls over 4.30+ is no small feat.

Daily Dose: Miles A Big Part Of USD’s Pole Vault Success

VERMILLION — Call it the Derek Miles Influence.
Miles, a two-time Olympian, is an assistant coach for the University of South Dakota track program, and has played a key role in attracting high-profile pole vault recruits to Vermillion.
First it was Bethany Buell of St. Louis, Mo. Since coming to USD in 2009, the junior has won three conference titles and qualified for the NCAA National Championships last year.
Next came Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) and Kaitlin Petrillose (Austin, Texas), who were both top-5 ranked vaulters in high school.
All they’ve done as freshmen this spring is tie the school’s indoor record — which Grove did two weeks ago — and meet the standard for the U.S. Olympic trails, which Petrillose did last Thursday.
Without a doubt, the opportunity to be coached by an Olympian in Miles was an attractive thought for those vaulters. And while in Vermillion, they’ve shined — all the while quickly improving.
With USD not eligible for the NCAA Indoor National Championships until next spring, the Coyotes decided to redshirt Buell and Petrillose — leaving them 2 and 4 years, respectively, for a chance to qualify for nationals.
In the outdoor season this spring, however, the Coyotes will again be eligible. And it’s not hard to imagine a scenario where USD finishes 1-2-3 at the Summit League Outdoor Championships and sends potentially two vaulters to nationals.
