Any Thoughts on Dyestats ranking system??
Go to rankings on dyestats page, and click the part to figure out what percentile you are ranked for certain events, i dont believe its correct. I punched in 14' and it put me at the 67th percentile, and then i put 16 and it said 85th, i believe. Theres no way 15% of the nation jumps 16 and higher, lol. And then for the 100m dash i put 11.5 and it gave me 89th percentile, while theres no way im in the 89th percentile for the 100 :-P. Cool system though, i would love to see it perfected, that would be very cool.

Thats not what percentiles mean...It means that your jump was higher than 85% of all the jumpers that were listed. It doesnt work the other way...I do agree though that it was kind of stupid and they should just go back to the good old fashioned list of names like it was last year... Also no offense to these guys, but they need to pick one of Scott Roths 5 marks and use that one...Same goes for McCorkel, Scott, and Morrison...Only pick the highest mark..

Re: Any Thoughts on Dyestats ranking system??
Yes i know, but if i am in the 85 percentile at 16 feet, that suggests that 15 % of vaulters are above 16 feet, hypothetically. And thats deff. not true. I think they should show how many entries they have for each event, because im guessing its mostly elite guys that enter their hieghts on dyestat, so thats the only people you are compared to.Biggie1110 wrote:

hmmmmm...I agree...like I said, I liked it when they just had a list of names...like last year

You Sir, Are right on. Its percentile of the given list
Good point! Not nearly as useful as knowing that you are 99th percentile out of 5500 HS varsity pole vaulters. (or something like that).
Therefore just give a list. (more than once a year PLEEEASE) And don't corrupt the state datbase with marks that one may "Call" high school marks or records, when they never occur in a sanctioned State organized and governed high school meet.
Now if you want to beat an "age group" record or set a PR (read PERSONAL record) thats great. And you happen to be a Sr in high school, thats fine. But don't call it a High school state or national record or a legal HS track season mark that improves your "rankings" just cause you couldn't accomplish it with in the State derrived season that everyone was fairly allocated ,sanctioned by and governed to, the same way (NFHS).
If you PR at some USATF meet in august (even if its the Nationals and beyound) , then next year at the season begining you can add it to USATF INDOOR. If you dont vault any USATF indoor, tough luck go do the mark in a real high school meet. But otherwise don't corrupt the data base. It does anything but "level the playing field"

Wait, let me get this straight. You think that it is not legit to count marks set in the summer on the 2006 outdoor list, but it's ok to add them to the 2007 indoor list??
The NFHS agrees with you on the former but no one agrees with you on the latter.
Many people live in parts of the country where the weather during track season makes it difficult to achieve good marks, and some state associations limit the ability to travel to better weather during the season (plus this is hard to do with school anyway).
I am all for summer marks being on 2006 lists, as long as they were set in legit meets. Honestly, most summer meets are more legit than most high school meets. Just look at the fiasco with Britany Parker and her 14 foot jump earlier this year.
As far as what should count for state records, leave that up to each state.
No offense, but Californians tend to be snobby and elitest, just because you guys have a big, snobby, elite state meet. If other states want to split up in 6 classifications, and have 6 state meets, that's their business. If other states want to count marks made in August for state records, that's really not the business of anyone outside that state.
I am glad Washington does both of the things I just mentioned. It is good for the sport. If California does not want to do either, that is their business, but don't hate on states who encourage their kids to compete more than 3 months a year.

Where you live is your choice, and that very well may limit your ability to jump in the outdoor season, but thats not the fault of any other state's vaulters. It wont be "corrupting the database" either, if anyone who makes a certain hieght before a certain time can enter that hieght in for indoor/ outdoor. I believe dyestat should just have the list of names, with the date they jumped it, and pick dates for the indoor/ outdoor records. Possibly... say that from march 5- july 4th, at a USATF meet, the performances go to the outdoor list. from july 5th to march 4th, they go to the indoor list.
Just my opinion on things...

ranking system
I don't think we need any stinking ranking system, ha ha!
I think we should just train hard, run fast, kick butt and vault high. Leave the ranking systems for the golfers.

I agree that Dyestat needs to revamp their system so each athlete is listed only once with their best performance. Once that athlete posts a better performance, the old one should be deleted.
Our sport thrives on statistics and records. That's what makes it so exciting, inspiring and motivating. If your only goal is to win that's OK. But if your goal is to get to the next level, you need to compare yourself to some of the best in your event and do what it takes to give yourself a chance to beat them. Without a LIST how would you know?
Becca is right about several high school meets being very questionable. I think that as long as you are competing as a high schooler or in a "Jr." meet while still not yet in college, all records you accomplish should count. Once you put on that college uniform, it's over.
And how could a summer outdoor performance ever count towards the next season's indoor marks? That doesn't make any sense to me. That's apples and oranges.
I know this.....Dyestat has done wonders for high school track & field and they will continue to make improvements on their ranking system. I can't imagine the countless hours that their staff puts in to do what they do.
