Rule Question: Vaulter loses for coming in early?

Does anyone know if this is a rule in NY state. A vaulter at Warwick Invite was penalized for coming in lower than her competitor. Neither had any misses until last height but instead of having a jump off the coach running it said the vaulter that came in higher wins. Never heard of this?

Unless NY has created some rules of their own, both athletes were tied and there should have been a jump off to determine the winner. I can't imagine any scenario where the vaulter that comes in higher should have an advantage on determining a tie breaker.

Yeah I didn't think that sounded right. I know the vaulter he declared the winner was the one he coaches. Do you think that would have something to do with it?

This used to be the third tie breaking rule in the pole vault;

"If two or more competitors tie in the pole vault, the competitor with the lowest number of attempts throughout the competition shall be declared the winner."

This rule has been gone for quite a while.

Interestingly, obsolete rules such as this are still thought to be valid by some coaches.

This was the case for second place at our North State meet this past weekend. I awarded two second-place ribbons for the two girls, but they announced them as second and third at the meet.

Very good point. The timing/results crew can make errors when posting the final results on line, expecially if there are ties or a jump-off for first place.

I recently had a jump off for first place at a major meet where the winner had a higher mark in the jump-off then in the pre jump-off competition.

That winner was not credited with the higher mark due to an error by the results crew. When this happens the vaulter is short changed their mark which could be a PR or record.

I always thought we should encourage more successfull vaults not penalize for them. Makes it more fun to spectators too.

I still see kids scurry off the pit that think if they're out of the pit before the bar falls it's a make. It's fun to see, always good for a chuckle. That rule hasn't been on the books for idk 50 years?

These coach's know the rules and read up on them every year.

I do not believe that any state or area has that as a rule. People get confused all the time.

Ask the official to show you the "rule".

I have heard that state HS associations make rule changes different from NFHS.

I would still ask to see their ruling. If they could not show you the rule I would file a protest with the referee.

Your thought about encouraging more successful vaults is a good idea. However, if you recall, not many years ago the length of pegs was shortened to make a touched bar more difficult to remain on.
