Lemoore’s Kyle Fraley clears 13-0 feet during the pole vault of the ‘Run for the Dream’ summer track and field series event Tuesday. The top two vaulters in two divisions qualified for next month’s North American Pole Vaulting Championships in Clovis Aug. 6. Fraley, who made the final day of the state track and field championships, will compete.
LEMOORE - There were four spots up for grabs in the high school division of the North American Pole Vault championships held in Clovis.
And Lemoore's Kyle Fraley is returning to Old Town.
Fraley, who just finished his junior year for the Tigers, cleared 14-6 at Tuesday's ‘Run for the Dream' track and field summer series meet, finishing second in the San Joaquin division to qualify for the area's biggest pole vault event Aug. 6.
The soon-to-be-senior will get a second crack at a meet that varies from a normal track and field meet.
"It's really exciting," said Fraley. "The music is playing, the crowd gets into it. It's more like a show.
"You want to clear the bar and get to celebrate with the fans."
Fraley, won the pole vault in the West Yosemite League and made it all the way to the state championship meet's final day, will compete in a team format that last had about five or six teams of three.
"I've been going to it since I can remember as a fan," Fraley said. "It's unlike any track meet because they get into ir. At a track meet, fans are just spectators."
Fraley qualified by making his first four jump attempts at heights of 13-0, 13-6, 14-0 and 14-6 before tripping up on 15-0. He nearly completed his third and final attempt, but grazed the bar on his way down. It lightly bobbled and appeared like it would settle before eventually falling.
The pole vault event at the series included both the San Joaquin and Fresno/Clovis area jumpoffs.
Caleb Gagliardi of Clovis West won the Fresno/Clovis jumpoff by clearing 15-0. Scott Greenman was second, also clearing 15-0.
Winning the San Joaquin portion was Liberty-Madera's Andrew Ramay (15-0), followed by Fraley.
The Run for the Dream summer series will conclude July 20, with city, team and individual champions being crowned in various track and field events.
