PH vaults to victory
McCardwell sets national mark
By Pete Boberg, For The Herald Bulletin
PENDLETON —
The Pendleton Heights Girls Track Sectional was not short of storylines on Tuesday evening. Arabian Ellie McCardwell set the national standard for the pole vault, and the meet, won by Pendleton Heights, was decided by the final event of the night.
McCardwell provided the early drama, drawing everyone’s attention as she pole vaulted for a national best 13 feet 5 inches, beating the current national high of 13 feet 3 inches.
After hitting the bar on her first attempt at 13-5, she cleared it with her second vault. She then went for the state record of 13-8 but couldn’t clear it in three attempts.
“I’m really happy,” McCardwell said. “It was a good day of jumping. I came out just trying to do my best, and I’ll go for the state record next week at regionals.”
McCardwell’s previous best was 13 feet, which she achieved earlier this season.
