Arabians' McCardwell soars to 13 feet
From Staff Reports
FORTVILLE —
Pendleton Heights’ junior Ellie McCardwell just keeps going up and up.
On Tuesday in a three-way girls track and field meet here McCardwell reached the magical figure of 13 feet to secure her place as the top pole vaulter in the state. That mark is a school record, erasing her feat of 12-feet-8-inches she established a week ago.
Reaching 13 feet put her in the top five nationally among all female high school athletes in the pole vault.
According to PH girls track coach Ron Hinton she actually cleared 13-feet-3-inches on her next attempt but bumped the bar off its perch on the way down. The event almost didn’t even take place as a persistent rain threatened to prevent the pole vault.
PH’s Leesa Zimmerman won the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Erica Manchess won the 400 for the Arabians and was on two winning relay teams.
Pendleton Heights won the meet with 71.5 points to 61.5 for Rushville and 36 for Mount Vernon. The Arabians are 13-0 and host the Pendleton Heights Invitational on Thursday at 5 p.m.
