Armentrout wins a national title in pole vault

Matt Armentrout has soared to the top of the national pole-vaulting charts.

The Deep Run High senior vaulted 15-9 today at the New York City Armory to win the National Scholastic Indoor Championships.

Armentrout, the Colonial District, Central Region champ and runner-up at the recent State Group AAA meet in Hampton, bested a coast-to-coast field of 56 vaulters in Manhattan.

Finishing third among girls was Patrick Henry junior Lizzie Powell, who jumped 12-6.

Both Armentrout, who will be vaulting next year for the University of Virginia, and Powell are coached by Val Osipenko of XTreme Heights, in western Henrico.
