Longmont senior hits 13 feet, 1 inch; wins MVA honors

LONGMONT -- It would have taken an off day for Elizabeth Stover not to be named the most valuable girls athlete at the Boulder County Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Everly-Montgomery Field.

Instead, the Longmont senior had the best all-around day of her brilliant prep career -- setting a new state record in the pole vault (13 feet, 1 inch), winning the long jump (16-11½), finishing second in the 100 hurdles (15.35) and walking off with the MVA hardware.

All of her marks were personal records.

"Three PR's is just amazing," Stover said. "I've had great days at Boulder County the last two years and I knew I was going to have a great day.

"I've been really close to PRs in the pole and long jump, so just being home and with the great warm weather today, everything just fell into place."

Stover also won the Nancy Nixon Award given to the girl with the highest score. She accounted for 30.5 of the Trojans' 122.5 points, which was more than enough for the team title.The second-place finisher in the pole vault, Monarch's Maddie Allen, cleared 9-6.

"Yeah, it's like a stadium record and a school record and all my family and friends are here to watch, too," Stover said of her historic pole vault. "It's just great. I've been working hard for so long, since the state meet last year when 13-feet was set as the record. To finally get out here and break it feels really great."

Stover, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion in the pole vault, broke her own record and is a heavy favorite to three-peat. But she's still aiming higher.

"I think I'll have to go higher because I know there are girls out there for the vault who will know I did 13-1 today and they're going to try to beat it," she said.
