Shade Weygandt of Mansfield, Texas, won the girls pole vault at the Simplot Games today with a vault of 13-1, a new meet record.

What was expected to be a fierce battle between Weygandt and Rachel Laurent of Louisiana, never materialized after Laurent no heighted at 12-3. Weygandt and Laurent are currently ranked 1-2 in the country, and this was the first time they competed against each other this season.

Weygandt opened at 12-3 and cleared it on her second attempt, the only vaulter to make the bar. She went on to jump 12-9 and 13-1 on her first attempts, breaking the previous meet record of 13-0 set by Julene Bailey in 2003.

Weygandt then raised the bar to 13-5. Her third attempt was especially close, nicking the bar off on the way down.

Weygandt expressed disappointment that she did not jump higher, and plans to continue to work on her technique in preparation for the Nike Indoor Nationals next month.
