Waiting a few hours in the sun didn't stop Marian Catholic grad Melissa Gergel.

The Illinois Class AA girls pole vault champ not only won the young women's pole vault at the USATF National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships on July 27 at Walnut, Calif., but she also set a meet record in her age category.

Gergel, a member of LV's Cheetahs, went 12 feet, 9 inches, but was not aware of her record-setting vault. The previous mark was 12-7 1/2 set by Elizabeth Neumann in 2005.

"I had no idea about that," Gergel said. "It felt good to win, but it was more important to try and jump well and get a personal best, which didn't happen. But it was exciting to win."

The Glenwood resident and Oregon freshman said because the starting height was at a low standard, she waited until the height went up to about 11 feet. There was a lot of standing around on a hot day and it took something out of her.

"I was drained being in the heat," Gergel said. "It slowed my run down, it was totally different. I felt like I was jumping the entire time. You have nothing left."

She said she had to give herself a psychological push for her last vault.

"I didn't think I had any energy left, but I did," Gergel said. "My warm-up felt good, but I was expecting to jump higher."

She also expected a battle with Nebraska vaulter Natalie Willer, who had beaten Gergel at Junior Nationals, but Willer went out earlier.

Gergel won the state meet at 12-6 and went 12-11 1/2 at Indianapolis in June. During the prep season, she battled a right hamstring injury that she suffered in late February. Her best vault was 13-2 last summer at the Junior Olympics at Benedictine University in Lisle.

Gergel said she feels fine and is splitting time between being a lifeguard during the day and practicing at night. Since she won't leave for school until mid-September, Gergel may enter a meet at the Indiana State Fair in August.

Gergel said she knows she will have to work harder to compete against the nation's best.

"I am looking forward to that level of competition that I didn't have in high school," Gergel said. "I know it will only make me better."
