If you guys were to guess, what would you say would be the average height for high school girls? What about boys?

It is also relative to what state/region you are in, but overall, that is pretty close.

I think the average is much lower...I mean in KY last year there were only 8 male athletes over 13'

I agree...but it does depend on the region. I don't think it's a fair estimate to average what the whole country does. For instance, where I come from in Southern Illinios, 12' will win almost every meet (except state, because of the schools from the Chicago area)

But in Cali the state qualifying height is 14' 9"....and i know that flordia, texas, illinois, and indiana had at least a couple 15+ vaulters....if we averaged every 8' male vaulter into the equation, it would be very low......i am just thinking about vaulters that are serious and actually pole vault rather than jump and hang on

i would say if you look at overall national statistics, an average male vaulter, average as in not great but good, goes between 15' and 16', and an average female between 11' and 12' feet, but thats just my opinion, because i would say those are pretty average jumps, nothing extremely special about them, on the national level, a lot of kids every year achieve these marks or higher

we are talking about an average...that means of everyone in general. If you wanted an average of state qualifiers or nationals jumpers, that is waaaay different than overall average. Also, you could average first year jumpers, or just freshman, or just seniors, etc.

but the original question was about the average, and therefore everyone must be included, from the 6-footers to the 17-footers.

In Arkansas, our starting heights at meets is 6 inches below the 10th best height (used to be 8th best height until we started placing 8 competitors) turned in for that particular meet. With this standard, the lower heights aren't achieved in a meet, raising the official averages. Obviously in club meets, the starting heights are set to accomodate everyone.

If an athlete is concerned about how they rank or compare with other vaulters, they should first look at the vaulters in their area/district. If they jump higher than those vaulters, check out the state competitors and so on.

Bottom line is that if you are just beginning to vault, you can't compare yourself to the more advanced vaulters. Set goals that are achievable and make a plan that allows you to work toward achieving those goals. Then set new ones, etc.

yea if you live in texas we had about 11 or 12 16' vaulters so mid 15's is almost average for guys and like 11 or 12 12' girls so mid 11's will be average! but thats just texas....

Theres nothing else to do in texas.....

if you go to dyestat.com and look at all the marks from last year, I think hunter and joseph have the averages about right, but i dk, it changes every year cause this sport is really growing and everyone is getting better and better!

And hey, there's more to do in texas, but who wants to when you can vault haha
