Ok, it's Sunday and the meet was yesturday so LancerVaulter. How did the 6 jump meet go. Were any of us correct with the format? Let us know. I'm sure all of us would like to find out how your 6 jump meet was actually conducted. Later...................Mike

6 jump rule

Unread postby drcurran » Sun May 08, 2005 2:37 pm

I can see where lots of PVer would not like this rule. As an official I don't much care for it either. That having been said. Most often we know the rules before we get to the competition. Get your coach, if possible, to "fight" to get that rule changed - before the day of competition. If they won't change you have the option not to enter (yeah I know that stinks - but it might send a message). Remember I will think the one false start rule is fair when they give the shot putters one throw, the HJers get one attempt at each bar, the PVers get one attempt and so on.
BYW - I believe anything with "alive" means how many are active in the competition and has nothing to do with misses- 5 alive, 4 alive, 3 alive, etc.

hey, sorry about taking a day to get back, anyway...
the meet was run with 5 alive, not a ''6 jump rule'' i
had asked the official and he said he never ran a meet
under that rule and he usually does 5 alive. i think my
coach meant the 5 alive because he said in the high
jump, sometimes they do the same thing with 6 guys...
the meet opened at 10' went to 11' and then up by 6''
i ended up doing poorly only clearing 10' there were like
35 vaulters and serious;y at least a dozen who were no
where in the ballpark of 10 feet. we got there late and
by the time i took my steps once we were starting and
my steps were so off so i ended up winging it.

no, they placed top 6 and placing heights went as follows...
1st - 12'
2nd - 11'6''
3rd - 11'6''
4th - 11'
5th - 11'
6th - 11'
i ended up in a tie at like 7/8/9 because i cleared 10' on
my first attempt. i was pretty annoyed with myself because
i know i should've gotten 11 at least. it would've been nice
to get a medal at a big invitational like that as a sophomore
...even though i know the heights weren't that impressive,
but i don't think northern NJ has many kids in the 13+ range

I like how you are lookin' at this. Granted, winning heights weren't world class but ya know? It looks like it was a pretty close event and that's when it's fun, (nerve racking) but fun just the same. You weren't that far away from a medal. It just wasn't your day. There are many more good days ahead of you. Look at it this way. keep working at this as hard as your are and the next two years, they'll be chasing you! I appreciate the update (even though it wasn't much fun for you to report) but this thread really caught my interest and it was fun for me to follow it through to the end. Later.....Mike

yeah it really ended up to be an interesting topic.
all because of a little miss-conception on the rule.
but yeah i wasn't happy with my individual showing
but like you said, just wasn't my day...and that's why
we compete. i have Varsity conference champs. coming
up on saturday and i am really looking forward to it
because once again, no world class heights around so
if i show up with my A-game, i could look as high as a
second place, with no misses of course. ttyl

It's actually a very simple event. Grab the pole, run a little, jump,go over the bar! Just have fun with it and know in your mellon that you're going over the crossbar. simple as that. Good luck. Of course you know I'll ask you Sunday or Monday how you did so I'll be looking forward to some good news. Just give it your best, don't think....just do and have fun. Be safe but have fun. Later..........Mike
