I have held off from giving my congratulations to Jack, his father, and Tim because there is still so much more Jack is going to accomplish that I didn't want to jump the gun until his season was finished and the full talley of Jack's accomplishments could be appreciated. However, his body of work has accumulated so fast now that I think I would be remiss in holding off any longer. To all involved: congratulations. Jack Whitt is in the midst of having the finest season any high school pole vaulter has ever pulled off. Enjoy it and remember these wonderful days.
I tend to stay on the sidelines when the "technical model" talk begins on this forum, but I feel compelled to give credit where it is long past due. Most of what I know about pole vaulting I learned from Dean Dial. Twenty five years later I may have strayed a bit on this aspect or that from what we were trying to do in the 80's, and Dean was far from the only person I learned from. But the basic tenents that I learned as a tiny kid from Oklahoma are the same principles I still teach every day, and the same ones Jack Whitt has followed with phenomenal success.
Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm6X6q3A0Bg and look for those same basic priciples. They are there.
