Q about a Rule- Passing your last attempt.

It would be best for all to not bring up old rules or what might have been old rules to determine the the places. It only matters what it is today.

I still hear young athletes say they really thought you go back to the
previous height to determine who won or placed heigher.

Don't know where they have heard this or read it, but it's a myth that needs to be busted!

I agree. It is too confusing to have people posting what they think is right or what it used to be. It is important to only have the correct information online. I cannot believe how often people screw something this simple up.

Kinda like how so many people still think that if you can get off the pad before the bar falls, it counts as a make. HJers are notorious for this one too.

Jumper 1......O.........O.........XO....XXX
Jumper 2.....XXO.....XXO......O......XXX

As far as I know, the 2nd jumper would win, but I guess its just a 'typical high school rumor'

The second jumper wins because he made the last height on his first attempt.

The first tie breaker is the last height cleared.
The second and final tie breaker is total misses.

The second one is the one people screw up.

Doesn't this also depend on how the state has set up their rules as well? My dad is a coach in Michigan and told me that Michigan actually has their own rule book aside from that of the high school federation. The Michigan rule book says that you are supposed to go back to the previous height... it doesn't say anything about counting the total misses. So what would you suggest to do in a situation like that?

I suspect that Michigan follows NFHS Rules, they just have their own rules on top of it (don't they require helmets), so I would imagine that total misses is still the second tiebreaker. It sounds like something that should be clarified with your state association.

No, they don't require helmets. Some schools do, but the state does not...

I should have an answer regarding an apparent state of Michigan ruling on going back to a previous height to break a tie tomorrow or at worst Wednesday. My fellow official (mostly NCAA level) who lives there and is a vault coach for all levels is 99% sure this is in incorrect procedure and is contacting the state office.

His first thought was that the "official" might be a horizontal or throws person who is incorrectly applying H-jumps/throws rules where you do go back to check previous jumps or throws to break ties.

I'm convinced there is no state approved deviation from the basic tie-break rules for the vertical jumps at the NFHS level.

I've been vaulting/coaching in Michigan for 20 years now and never in that time have I ever seen a separate Michigan rule book. We've always used the NFHS book. It is now, and as long as I can remember, always has been, best height achieved, then total misses.

In this situation I would just go to the meet official and have them figure it out and go support my teammates.haha.. let them deal with it..and if your that official..make the call

Time to put this one to bed.

Coach HHSPVCoach convinced me that that the previous height procedure
was incorrect and I heard back from my fellow "Michigan" official who confirmed the correct ruling from the state office.
That being, NFHS rules are followed to the tee for the breaking of ties.

It's disappointing to hear this kind of stuff happens, but all we can do is deal with, learn from it and move on. Errors in judgment are one thing, but errors due to not reading up on the rules each year is unjustifiable.

yah, after all that, im just going to ask the meet offical next time.

all i can say is that in maryland, the total number of misses throughout the competition is never used as a tiebraker, the only time a jumpoff would occur is if the meet went like this

or

or anything like that

if u say that the total number of misses is a tiebraker, then this could happen
