Two state champions shattered the meet and stadium girls pole vault records Friday at the Texas Relays.

Junior Rachel Laurent of Vandebilt Catholic in Houma, La., soared 13 feet, 4 inches, breaking the previous records of 13-3 (stadium) and 13-1 1/2 (meet).

Minutes after Laurent's vault, sophomore Shade Weygandt of Mansfield cleared 13-4, beating her personal best by an inch.

Hays junior Jessica Doyle placed third at 12-6.

Laurent won the state title last year in Louisiana, and Weygandt placed first at the Texas state meet as a freshman. Laurent cleared 13-4 on her first attempt Friday, and Weygandt made it on her third attempt.

Both fell short after the bar was set at 13-8.

The previous Texas Relays record was set by Hays' Britni Lawrence in 2004, and the previous stadium record was set by McKinney's Britany Parker in 2005.

This marked Laurent's first appearance at a track meet in Texas. As for Weygandt, she should return to Myers Stadium for next month's state meet.

Aledo senior just misses
By NAKIA HOGAN
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

North Crowley junior Jamaica Collins competes in the girls long jump finals Friday night.

AUSTIN -- Aledo senior Joseph Farley and Mansfield sophomore Shade Weygandt were in the same boat Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

They vaulted high enough to win a pole vault title but both were left with runnerup finishes because of more missed attempts.

Farley cleared 16-feet, 6 inches, the same height as Houston Clear Brook's Maston Wallace, who had fewer misses and won the boys championship.

In the girls division, Weygandt and Rachel Laurent of Houma (La.) Vanderbilt Catholic both cleared a meet- and stadium-record 13-4. But Laurent's fewer misses gave her the title.

Maston is way, way, way undergripped. Did I say he's undergripped?

HS Vaulters on World Deep Lists

Unread postby roger/over » Sat Apr 07, 2007 7:47 pm

Very impressive marks in both boys and girls events. The top five girls will make Mirko Jalava's world deep list for women at 3.60m+, and the top two boys will make his tougher standard for men of 5.00m+.

I think Shade Weygandt's 4.06 would place her at the twelfth best all-time for a sixteen-year-old.
