As Maston Wallace gets older, his height in the pole vault continues to increase.
When he was 15, Wallace cleared 15 feet. At 16, he cleared 16 feet and this past weekend, the 17-year old senior from Clear Brook vaulted 17 feet indoors to win the Elite High School Division of the USATF National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.
"It's the biggest indoor meet for the year," Wallace said. "It's a great atmosphere to jump in because of all the fans and the competition."
Wallace is 6 1/2 inches shy of tying the national high school indoor record set by Colorado's Pat Manson in 1986.
Wallace is the top-ranked high school pole vaulter in the country by Nike, Dyestat.com and Jim Spears National Prep. He has been invited to compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Landover, Md., and at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York in March. He hasn't decided whether to attend.
Wallace finished second at 16-3 at the Class 5A state meet last season. He missed much of last season because of a quad and hip flexor injury.
"I am hoping to just keep improving during this season, now that I am healthy and ready to go," Wallace said.
Wallace plans to attend the University of Texas on a track and field scholarship.
